Rogue One was definitely darker than the original trilogy, but otherwise it came closest to nailing the look and tone of those movies. The humour felt much more natural, and the setting just felt more in-harmony with the original take. It only had one cringe-worthy one-liner! Again, the story was a lot darker, but I really liked that. I think it was by far the best Star Wars movie since the originals, though there's a lot I like about the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi too.

just finished watching rogue one...thank goodness I hung up my old man pants...I feel like I just witnessed the best starwars movie since empire strikes back....way better than the last jedi and the force awakens...way better...so good....
having only watched The last jedi and The force awakens once, walked away with only small resonating issues, really small and understandable as to why it was done...super flashy post production cartoon characters and the filters?camera?finalizing software? cg rendering set designs used?, made it look shiny and unreal like attack of the clones, some times felt like the characters were not really there, which they werent...& obviously not caring much about scene to scene cohesiveness, the amount of action they felt needed to stuff into a scene, that forced sloppy directing, where we could have been spending more time with said character, some scenes had them jumping all over the place so we could watch more laser blasting, instead of nice REAL shots(he's/she's on the ship---suddenly back with the group)
plus how the fuck can someone make a startrek movie then a starwars movie...or whichever came first...same director? fuck that guy....dream haze light show scene croping glasses wearing turd...jj...anyways...GRUNGE! star wars is cyberpunk as fuck! I stopped hating jj when I saw this take off
im liking how they just killed everyone off in these movies...made sense in tfa & tlj ..like lets move on.. shall we, if you didnt hate c-3po you do now.. right? if I remember in the novels luke turned to the dark side, so im glad they kinda touched on that....but the way he died I can see why people are bitchin....but thats the point ..staring off unto the horizon, past the 2 suns.. into that middle way....should not have died though....not even gonna start on leia and her backup force generator..whatever.. I saw it as a homage to the late carrier fisher.
but killing everyone off in rogue one....now that was FUCKING AMAZING...if I watched it on a huge screen stoned I probably would have cried and clapped.
rogue one gave me the feeling for a second in one scene that the empire is what america wishes it could be and the resistance is how america wants u to see islam.

That's because they lack imagination..

in that case ALL OF the TFA dialogue is cringe
It's just a super cheesy one-liner, from a character who has never been shown to have a sense of humour, no less. And yeah, my biggest complaint with both the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi is the utter prevalence of that garbage. That line didn't ruin Rogue One for me, and I still mostly like the other new movies too, but I definitely think they're worse for that type of writing.

For the little that my opinion is worth, I think the movie had some merits, but my big takeaway was that the plot was a trainwreck. There was no cohesion to it (some parts logical, some parts pacing), and the longer I watched it the more disinterested I became. I had no emotional attachment to any of the characters; they're not bad characters, they just all felt super flat to me, like they're only present in the story because they have to be.
Honestly, I still don't really understand what's going on with the overall plot. They never really explain how the First Order became a thing, or how the Resistance is seemingly so tiny. They reinstated the Republic, and suddenly have no one to support it in the face of the First Order? I feel I'm being a bit critical, and maybe if this weren't continuing such a huge series it wouldn't seem so potholed, but that kinda stuff really bothers me.
I did have one theory (forgive me if someone else made the same observation, I haven't read the whole thread) that Carrie Fisher's death somehow threw off filming or writing, but a quick wikipedia search hints at script rewrites and other issues due to strikes well before she passed away.
I can appreciate it for what it is, but I'll probably pass on the next one and read a synopsis somewhere.

According to Hamill the film went the way it was supposed to go but her death really screwed up Ep. IX since the plan was for her to die in that film similarly to how Mark and Harrison died in TLJ and TFA, respectively.

Yea, makes sense. She might go the way of Mon Mothma or Tarkin with the holograms/CGI.

Pretty sure I read that the makers are committed to not using a CGI Leia. Man, I hope they don’t...very poor taste. Opens a dangerous door, too. Want Elvis, Brando, and Brad Pitt in Ocean’s 33? No problem!
