I mean based on what I know about the Olympic Village I'm pretty sure everyone comes away from that with something.
But to actually answer, I think there's a fairly wide gulf between the folks who are genetically/systemically gifted enough to be Olympians and the ruiners of society who are getting participation medals.

(Also we were never allowed to keep our uniforms but I get your point and I agree... I just don't think the PT being a trophy automatically imbues it with this nefarious aspect. I feel like no one would complain if it was a lanyard).

I think me and D.o.s had the discussion about participation trophies irl? Think it boils down to how you view human action or something. Should you get praise for doing whatever, or should you actually have to do something slightly meaningful before the praise comes. Etc etc. Mostly bullshit in discussions such as these.
And IM, it sounds like it was the right decision firing that guy. I get that it was hard, but after he's done moaning he might find something to do that he's actually good at.

Maybe dude, dunno. When you have a PhD in mechanical engineering from a top 10 school and you got fired from your last three jobs...those people are hard to come by. I hope he's OK...feeling super shitty about it.

Ah, yeah, didn't mean to make light of the situation. But if he's lost his last three jobs and breaks down when he loses this one, after not fulfilling the expectations.... (this is coming from a guy in Norway with whatever benefits that gives me).

To be honest, if he's an asset then the faculty should have pulled him aside long before this came to a head and offered to coach/train him in whatever area(s) he's clearly sucking ass in.
Unless he's just drunk on his own hubris and shitting all over people, in which case, reality hurts when it hits.
I am considering giving up on persisting with things I love.
Being me is not working out.

was having this conversation today with my wife and her mom.
wife, her dad and her brother all do heating and cooling together. in all the years of the company they've been the core three employees. they hired one guy who left a few years back but just returned (he was running a farm) and then my father-in-law's nephew worked with them for a summer and just recently they hired this kid out of high school who is looking to go into welding so the experience in the trades is good for him.
well the nephew and the recent new hire are't exactly great. the biggest problem is that you have to keep on them to get them to perform this task and then that task and then the next.
and that concept makes sense to my wife and i (she taught philosophy for a few years so encouraging people to perform at higher levels has been with her for some time & i manage a group of salesman and technicians). we understand that we're highly motivated and striving to always be better but some people are just so cool skating by with whatever the minimum is.
a few years back i was turned down for a promotion. i was younger and a lot of things didn't make as much sense then as in hindsight. but the thing that was most frustrating to me is that while i was trying to get the promotion i was always asking what was working, what wasn't and how i could improve. nobody could give me anything other than, "man you're doing great." now i should have probed and prodded and learned more but i just took that as a positive sign and let it die. thereafter i vowed to never let a member of my team not hear what needed to be heard.
sometimes it's as simple as, "you and i know you're better than this and your performance today has been disappointing," or "you killed it today."
sometimes things are more challenging. that shit can be so uncomfortable. and i've found that often times the more uncomfortable the better the feedback usually is.
my two sense, anyway.

Yeah definitely.
Honest and constructive criticism and feedback goes fucking miles.
Even if it's, "hey, you did good in these areas, but it doesn't appear like you get these concepts at all. You need some help with that?"
Some people are happy to do the bare minimum (we've just had a wave of staff who were pissing and moaning about doing the bare minimum) and some workplaces don't inspire the above or beyond. But if you open up that dialogue, at least it sets an expectation and makes it clear that there are objectives to shoot for.
Not saying IMan's dude didn't have that opportunity, I'd say the department had made that very clear, but I know from experience how damaging role ambiguity and unclear conditions can really unravel your ability to give fucks at work.

Yeah don't want to keep bringing this up, but dude had every opportunity. Had a meeting with his dean, myself and the president this fall to tell him he was way behind, as well as many conversations and messages to that effect. Should have been no surprise--no one else was surprised at all...eh, fuck it.

Yeah. It is what it is, not your fault ya know? You did what you needed todo and gave the opportunities needed.
