i hear you...the last thing in my chain is an EHX Black Finger compressor the size of a San Francisco studio apartment, the bottom of which the previous owner completely covered with Velcro(TM). i swear to god that it takes a crowbar to detach it, and it pretty well takes up 2/3 of the left side of the board. it also requires that great whacking huge proprietary power supply bigger than the one for my Casio. but it sounds really cool.

1) what do you call the often super-cool looking radial metal plate found under the knobs/dials of vintage electronics? i've seen it referred to as a "scale" but i'm sure there's another term, i just can't seem to pull it outta my swiss-cheesed gray matter right now?

I've seen that shop before.

I think "scale" might actually be the correct technical term or at least one that's widely used.

Don't worry, I think Gear Hero HQ'll order more of those.

1) sort of depends on what sound you're goin' for.

In general though (and specifically with Green Ringers, because ideally Green Ringers need a little push):

compressor or boost (for just a little more oomph)

any mild dirt (startin' to make things a bit more interesting)

fuzz (more interesting still)

heavy fuzz (totally nasty signal annihilation)

{right now I've got this goin' on:

I've got lots of favorites.
