The way a rangemaster works, its a passive HPF into a flat gain stage so it cuts lows then boosts the remaining signal equally at all frequencies.

You can of course build a active gain stage using something like an op amp that will only boosts the high end without altering the low end.

Of course, do they sound any different doing it one way or the other, thats up to you to decide

That Naga Viper can be a subtle pedal with a dark sounding guitar but it really brings that Sabbath out and on leads sounds great. Still need to try it out on a P90 guitar.

The phase is nice, really thick on a slow sweep, Mahavishnu tones, will need a bunch more time to really get into it and experiment with the "parked phase" setting, maybe with my old Boss PS-1r in a stereo setup.

Kind of already came and went. There have been a ton of Rangemaster clones and variants out there in the past few years.

This ought to sound corny but I think the Naga Viper makes the Rangemaster obsolete. I have a buddy with several Rangemaster clones. All are from reputable small builders and one of them is that one that came out a couple years ago that looks exactly like the real thing. It cost the dude $375 and was the best sounding one. He had me gut the thing and build a NV clone in there. I posted pictures awhile back. With the heat and range knobs all the way clockwise the thing sounds exactly like a nice Rangemaster. It's seriously perfect. Then of course with the NV range and heat (gain) can be adjusted and it becomes an incredibly broadly useful pedal. They're apples and oranges but it's tied with the SHO as my favorite booster.

Yo if we are talking Rangemasters and treble boosters, the smallsound/bigsound Sparkle Motion easily takes the cake as the most flexible. Input and output gain control, adjustable tone/eq and bias controls with a switch to toggle bass or treble boost. Can be used as either a dark boost or treble boost and anywhere in between. Also I've seen them go for as low as $80.

I've heard a ton of praise for the NV - is there anything in particular about it that makes it different than other rangemasters?
