It was just such a huge shame, made me miss playing with anyone else ever I played with. Any band I jumped in on with playing bass, all i needed was the tuning they were in and I just picked up the song as we went, 2nd time round I had it down by watching the guitar player, and by the 3rd time I'm adding stuff to it. if it's something from scratch oh all types of shit would come to me. it's like okay this is the root but I can do all this other bullshit and it'll sound even more amazing so I did.

This is how all my experience with "jamming" and auditioning with strangers has gone. If I have access to songs ahead of time I learn them and if they start throwing new songs at me on the spot, I usually can just pick up the basics by watching the guitarist and listening to the drummer easily. Then after a couple runs through I can start throwing in fills and harmonies and all that. If I'm in the reverse positions, trying someone out or jamming with someone who is trying to pick up on what I'm playing, I get really frustrated if they know what notes to play but can't seem to pick up the general feel of the riffs at all. I feel like that's one of those things either you have it or you don't. It might be possible to get better at picking it up with a lot of practice, but I don't want to be the person they practice on.

agreed. I don't have the patience with basically having to teach someone the shit like that. I was forced to do it immediately and managed so I expect the same to some degree.
I don't have the time to waste away doing that shit.

Today was better, I wrote and recorded 3 songs for a long in the works split. So at least i feel productive.

I think the current rule in the US is that the more advanced your degree, the less money you earn.
I went on a job interview yesterday just to see what's out there. The guy said the position pays 50k. I guess the 5+ years experience in my field didn't mean much.
The people I know who seem to be making the most money are the ones with only college or even high school degrees.
Most people I know with masters or law degrees are earning less.
Anyways, not to get off track too much, but this has really been getting at me lately.
Times like these I'm thankful for doom music.

I'm beginning to believe that. Most of my buddies from high school without degrees are doing as well as I am, plus they got a seven year jump on getting set up while I was in school. And let's not even talk about student loans - I don't have any, but my wife has more than enough for the both of us

It's partially perspective and age. I thought the same when I got out of grad school, but took my first job for 45k, I see kids starting at my current place for 13/h... My degree is in chem, and that field is horse shit and still run like a caste system, where you can't even apply to some jobs unless your degree is the proper level.


I thought it was really limiting, but the thing that seemed to happen with me is that it allowed me to jump past people. I manage 13 people now, and several of them are 10+ years older than me. But in the end it's because my degree really did present opportunities that others didn't have. It's not something you realize when you first graduate, because you still are starting at the "bottom" it's all in career trajectory, you start slightly higher, but once you prove yourself, your career rises much faster, without all the years of grinding along.

As far as theory goes, I don't know a lick of it. Like…zero. I'm not proud of it, and I wish I did know a little something, but I've never learned. I'm not much a a technical player though, and it's never really been an issue.

Not knowing any theory hasn't stopped you getting somewhere. So its all good. You make the best of what you have.

i don't even know what keys and intervals and shit are. i mean, i kind of know, but not really. i've studied a wee bit of theory on my own. like i know a bit about counterpoint, but it's really basic. but basically i don't know shit. i never had a fucking lesson in my life. my family was super unsupportive about music growing up, so i was just on my own. plus i'm pretty stupid so i just cave man that shit. congratulations to everyone who writes songs in 5 minutes. or who learns songs in 5 minutes. that's great. it takes me two months to write a song. they're usually 15 minute songs, but still. i mean, if i show up and jam with someone and i'm watching them and playing with them i can usually figure out something to do before too long. but if someone just tells me a key and intervals and starts going i'd probably just pack up and hit the door. not my style at all. i'd much prefer someone dancing the fucking parts to me. that sounds great.

I feel ya bro, I had the constant running joke of my dad thinking calling me a punk was some hellish insult, kinda made it all come into a humerous perspective for me. I mean he got all big on that word before I was old enough to realize it had a different meaning than an insult, but once I realized that it helped make the dude into a joke. the guy used to yell at me late night for playing a strat unplugged in the opposite end of our place. I don't know how he even heard it. I've tried to reach out in recent years but he's still a fucking idiot who treats people like shit.

It is one of my favorites that we do. We have another new one that I've been dying to record that is sort of a continuation of that song. Same style, lots of clean stuff, and a massive doom breakdown (if there is such a thing) in the middle, and ending with a solo over the outro. Once the lyrics are done we are gonna be recording a 5 song album.

AX, that sucks about your relationship with your old man. I was a hard headed shit head when I was a teen and my dad worked a lot so we were drifted apart a little then. Now though we are very close and are always doing shit together. I'm extremely lucky that I got that chance.

This is the impression I have gotten from talking to recruiters for various companies. I still think it's a huge load of bullshit that the starting salary for a chemistry PhD can be lower than 50k. I've read that the most lucrative average career trajectory is to get a 2 year accounting degree and work your way up the corporate ladder.
