Any band I jumped in on with playing bass, all i needed was the tuning they were in and I just picked up the song as we went, 2nd time round I had it down by watching the guitar player, and by the 3rd time I'm adding stuff to it. if it's something from scratch oh all types of shit would come to me. it's like okay this is the root but I can do all this other bullshit and it'll sound even more amazing so I did.
This is how all my experience with "jamming" and auditioning with strangers has gone. If I have access to songs ahead of time I learn them and if they start throwing new songs at me on the spot, I usually can just pick up the basics by watching the guitarist and listening to the drummer easily. Then after a couple runs through I can start throwing in fills and harmonies and all that. If I'm in the reverse positions, trying someone out or jamming with someone who is trying to pick up on what I'm playing, I get really frustrated if they know what notes to play but can't seem to pick up the general feel of the riffs at all. I feel like that's one of those things either you have it or you don't. It might be possible to get better at picking it up with a lot of practice, but I don't want to be the person they practice on.
agreed. I don't have the patience with basically having to teach someone the shit like that. I was forced to do it immediately and managed so I expect the same to some degree.
I don't have the time to waste away doing that shit.
Today was better, I wrote and recorded 3 songs for a long in the works split. So at least i feel productive.
