There is ALWAYS an underground of excellent and more interesting bands that never get much notice unless you actually take a bit of time and dig. Worrying about what the top layer of scum and failure is doing is pointless outside of telling someone that doesn't know better that they suck and should listen to X band that was far better.
You're right. I wish there was a better word I could use. I just like actually be able to find people to chill with who like the same music I do/the bands I like can sell stuff vs. band X being trendy and cool to listen to amongst the cool kidz.
It's not a bad time to be a metal fan/doom fan in the NYC area. St. Vitus Bar has plenty of awesome shows and lately a lot of them have been selling our or near selling out. That's good for the bands obviously. Sure some losers show up who think it's trendy or ironic to be at a show but the majority of the crowd is chill and it's easy to bump into people you know. This is all fairly recent and I wonder what it would be like to be 10 years younger at these shows since the median age even seems to be trending younger at some shows. Which is cool. Good to know the good music will be passed on. Definitely wasn't like this in the late 90s as far as I knew back then. When I first started going to shows it was either really young crowds at a In Flames show or a really older crowd at an older band's show. It was weird sometimes.
