modulation? fuck it. im twisting knobs and never happy with the outcome everytime I fuck with them. :(

Agreed. I've never found mod that I've got along with. For atmosphere, gimme some tremolo, delay, and verb.

I hope nobody would ever think that my comments regarding a certain amplifier company had anything to do with tone (subjective!), brand loyalties (pointless!), 'vintage mojo' (HA!) or hipness (I will kill you!).

conky wrote:I gotta figure out how to get around the pedal having a seizure when I roll it all the way down. Seems like a minor thing though since it sounds so fucking good.

I hope you can get it how you want it man! As I mentioned I have had a return of one pedal for this very reason. And I understood. You don't grab a phillips when you need a flathead :animal:

Jäke wrote:you'd really just be guessing yourselves.

I am definitely not guessing at anything related to what I said.

Ancient Astronaught wrote:Well Darren (D-Day) the one who commented on his insight of the amps, works / worked at Soldano.

DUDE! As I have told everybody more than once, I never worked for Soldano. I did build one hundred million footswitches for him in order to subsidize the cost of my amp but I have never been an employee there. It has been discussed and I'd do it in a second but his biz has been up and down too much to take on another guy. What may be more likely to happen is that I end up renting space in his building for Electric Heat affairs. But yeah, speaking of Soldano I'd never go near a Jet City either but that's because of American jobs vs Chinese jobs and has nothing to do with that other brand I'm staying away from. I may be wrong about this but I think Mike has ended his involvement with the JC people.

pelliott wrote:I almost always subconsciously make my dirt pedals sound samey at first and then try to figure out a variety of new sounds later. If I can't find a more unique function for it then usually I sell or trade the pedal.

This is what I do. I usually try to get 'my sound' first. If it can do that that's neato. Then whether it can or can't do what I'm already doing I go through and try to find what's really good. Where does this pedal shine? If it doesn't shine in ways that complement what I'm doing I'll at least know what it does well. That way I'll know how to apply it in a studio setting or as a potential remedy to other folks' tone maladies.

About amps: There is so much more at stake than tone when selecting a tool for a job. The further and more frequently one gets away from home the more these other aspects come into play. If I have a fuzz and the amp is a hundred tube watts with a functioning EQ then I'll probably have very little trouble getting my sound. So in relation to my own cash outlay, I thought quite a bit about the other stuff. A lifetime warranty is nothing to sneeze at for instance. Something to consider amid the tone talk perhaps?

Derp, that's my bad I totally brain farted when typing that. My apologies good sir. In my head I just relate it to you being around high quality well built amps and knowing one when you see one which was the reference point.

I have noticed that theres almost no knew Jet City amps so it wouldn't surprise me that that relationship ended.

I know it's been discussed several pages back but...

This new Old Man Gloom is a fucking ripper. I love the noise and drones all over this fucking record. Random blips and oscillations peaking out everywhere. This is the type of shit I want to do in my music. Fuck. this is gnarled as all hell.

I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but I really want to, especially after what Kurt said about recording it in his top ten albums he recorded list:

Kurt Ballou wrote:The hijinks and shenanigans that took place during the release of this record hopefully provided their audience with a tiny glimpse into the misery I experienced when working with these idiots.

Yeah, there's definitely truth to that -- and that's part of the reason so many people end up just going Boss>Marshall or whatever. Not only does that shit always work, but if it doesn't there's going to be someone who can work on it/give you a rental/let you borrow a backup within 50 miles, be it a shop or a bro.

On the other hand, if you hate gigging, you never have to worry about these things. :p

Jake, please don't take anything said as an affront to you. As I said earlier, they sound great in the right hands. Let me try to illustrate what I don't really dig about them. I've busted some knobs on amps a few times, not a big deal. replace the pot that had the shaft snap and drive on. Most of the amps I have and love are not made with PCB mounted pots so it's an easy quick job that really only involves the faulty part. Last week we broke one on the Peavey classic 400. That amp is constructed with modern, cost effective manufacturing like the "recycled" amps are, and I'll be unscrewing shit, removing every knob on the amp, carefully taking the board out, making sure the new pot will line up with the hole when done etc.
It's just way more of a pain in the ass. Never mind if the issue is more than a simple busted knob.
I break shit. With me, it's not an issue of IF an amp will break, but when it will break and how easy it will be to get back up and running.
Nial seems like a great guy and everyone that I've talked to raves about him, but the secrecy with the gut shots stuff just reeks of voodoo. Some quick mods to run the amps hotter and a visual upgrade doesn't really work out for me price wise.

Like Corey, I've popped many a gearboner over Jake's stuff that he's posted on stonerrock.com in past years. And he's a hell of a player. And I bet he has a giant tonebeard as well. That is all.

I've noticed that Jet City have basically fallen from the map. They even had a $2000 amp coming out. It was teased at NAMM a few years ago, but now they've basically disappeared, the whole company. I finally sold my modified Jet City very recently. I don't really miss it that much. It was a sublime sounding amp, but I rarely used it when I had the Fryette to play.

yeah...doesn't look like they are doing anything new and the current stock is so cheap which is selling really well in the UK...i guess they just keep making and selling at really low prices... :idk:

I'm in USPS hell waiting for the Coven. :D :D

I JUST WANTED TO RIFF ON MY DAYS OFF. GODDAMN THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE.

(I mean, I totally understand the whole ship from WA to Michigan thing. I just want to whine. On the flip side... I dialed in my Demon King to a sweet spot recently and have been thoroughly enjoying riffing with it so I'm not complaining too much.)

Florida doods. We liked your state so much that we're going back on a week long run this spring. Lets hook up and do some shows together (or at least hang out).
