Sounds on the 55 are worlds better and tweakable on the synth side of things (including acoustic and with pads etc), but I'm talking simply about the emulated guitars that are ported over from the VG-99 etc.
The alternate tuning on the fly alone was worth it for the octave down etc, it saved me from buying subpar Bass VI copies.
The no latency, tweak the body size etc on the virtual guitars is amazing, and I can still use 2 synth voices that are actuall editable to round it out if I need, plus the regular guitar signal.
After over a year the thing is still like i just bought it, amazing and makes me happy.

I wish I knew more about those roland guitar synths, and that I could afford one.

They're cheap if you don't buy the current one - Gr-20 and pickup used is $200ish.
Wont' fit as I have it on anything but a Classic Player Jag/Jazzmaster, the Mascis Jazzmaster, or the AV50th Jag - the bridge movement perfectly facilitates the pickup. On normal guitars, not an issue.
The big thing you get with the current one is the virtual guitars (realtime processing that nets you +/- 2 octaves, programmable per string tuning on a virtual instrument - guitar, bass, sitar, acoustic stuff, the old analog Roland guitar synths,e tc), 2 synth voices that are actually pretty well adjustable, fairly insane internal effects choices and signal routing, and computer interface.
The GR-20/33 do perfectly serviceable synth sounds and have decent tracking (not as good as the 55, but good), the nylon/acoustic guitars in them aren't horrific but they're not in the same league as the vguitar thing in the VG-99 or GR-55.
I sold a bunch of stuff to afford the unit, still glad I did.

Here's my beloved:

It's a cheapie Rogue that my dad bought me on MF during my senior year of high school. I wouldn't typically buy a budget instrument sight-unseen, but I got lucky - this one plays and sounds like a dream even after all these years.
What sort of strings are all y'all using? I searched forever to find the perfectly warm yet articulate string and have found it with Martin "Silk & Steel Marquis." They just sound and feel so so good.

My acoustic lovely. Yamaha FG735s. I have it tuned somewhere close to C-G-C-Eb-G-D or a half step below and it's amazing. The low notes sound round and woody and raw but the higher notes sound nice and chimey. Perfect for me. I want thicker strings to get better sustain out of this low tuning but I'm afraid to lose the sound haha.

I'm weird. I like nickel flats on everything, including acoustics.

My only acoustic, 70's MIJ El Degas. Seems to be a copy of a Guild, and it actually plays and sounds pretty damn good. And the best part is that I snagged it for free off my local CL.

I totally left that record in the picture on purpose. No shame

I should learn "Killed the Lord, Left for the New World". Would be good.

Any recommendations on a good acoustic electric in the 500ish range? I feel like I know nothing about them.
