Walrus - does combining two old pedals count as one new pedal?
Way Huge - does renaming old pedals count as new pedals?
CBA/Zvex - oh god here we go again

I think the Effect Pedal artwork is a tribute to the Public Image Ltd recording. The vinyl was called "album", the cassette was called "cassette" and the CD was called "compact disc".
Fun fact: Steve Vai played on a couple tunes on that recording.

^^ Nailed it. Although with that look I personally would've hoped for something that instead emulates the gear of Keith Levene or John McGeoch (neither played on "Album," of course!)

The funny thing about the Way Huge generic design is that such a thing was really the norm for years, still is for some manufacturers, Boss comes to mind. DOD was the same, pre Grunge and Gonkulator.

Nearly every boss pedal has the same basic graphic design (only difference is color) and a generic name that simply described the function (Distortion, Flanger, Phaser, etc).

So do you think they are changing the “Swollen Pickle” and “Saucy Box” because they’re afraid of getting “cancelled” or because they seem in poor taste?

Dang,I hope not permanently. Swollen Pickle alludes to Muff heritage, and I never played a Saucy Box but I thought the finish was gorgeous.

They are limited finishes, and I'm pretty sure the Swollen Pickle is safe as long as the Camel Tone and Saucy Box and whatever 1.5 entendre Mr. Tripps has in store for us in the future are still around........

Haven't you ever seen the Way Huge Smashed Pasty? :erm: :?:

Yeah, but that font & spacing is entirely what BOSS is all about! I never considered the last DOD line to be doing the same thing, but now I cannot unsee it, just like this:

I am old enough to remember the generic section of the grocery store that weren't Ralph's (endless white with bolts of blue lines), but it still beats all the cozier label branding names that have endured (Everyday Value, Best Choice, Superior Selection, etc.).

Image

It still endures in Canada, however (beware of big chicken):

No Frills has a Twitter hype atm after the buzzfeed write up but Canadians don’t forget they are owned by the Westons and pay their employees absolute shit as soon as it was okay to forget the “value frontline workers” was a thing.

Personally though I dig the Boss / DOD aesthetic value vs. some wild and crazy design.

Back in the 80s, when grocery stores around here (SWPA) had generics, they were black and white, instead of blue and white.

I'm sure everyone here knows it, but Flipper beat PiL by a few years:

Of course, after PiL made Album, Flipper made:
