Sometimes you have to go along with it, depending on the gig and the importance of the show, but for the most part, if you tell the sound guy "look, this is who we are, this is what we're about and the volume is a part of it" they'll go along with if you're polite. The tiniest bit of head's up to the sound guy will do wonders to make them just be cool about it, sometimes.

Tuned a guitar up to standard and played a bunch of Johnny Winter tunes this afternoon... And the surface of the callous on my third finger came off. There's still a good base there but sheesh. I guess I've only been playing drop tunings and haven't been playing any lead for a while.

Opposite for me, I threw a pack of 13-70s on my LP last night and tuned way down

I recorded demos for the Dunwich one knobbers this weekend. One playlist for the guitar ones, one for bass. You can go onto my page to check the individual demos with signal chain info and all that stuff. Not much in the way of settings to show off, so just a few quick clips and for the boost just a run through the volume range.

Around here theres a couple types of clubs.... Theres the small venue's with no actual sound guy (usually just the promoter running a lackluster POS PA) where its fairly no holds barred when it comes to volume on stage, there's small club/bar's who hire sound men and where theres a sound guy they don't want to risk losing the job so they try to keep volume down so the cops don't come (they also mic a full stack for 20-30 people and tell you to turn it just above silence), theres some small clubs with house sound guys that depending on the actual venue and how they mic stuff will usually let you crank fairly loud (as long as you talk to them ahead of time, if they all ready set up a mic on your cab they gonna be pissed and tell you to turn down, if you tell them hey I'd rather not go through the PA and just crank my rig they usually will) and then theres the big clubs (800+ people) who deal with the real deal touring bands that come through and those mofo's will let you crank your shit to ten and STILL mic you! But to play there you either gotta be able to sell 500+ tickets or know the touring headlining band.....

These discussions always make me happy that I live somewhere with understanding venues.

We're not sure yet; my fiance (wife when we move) is applying to jobs mostly in downtown Brooklyn and financial district of Manhattan so she wants a simple commute and I'm trying to be walking distance to LIU campus if possible. Of course, finding rent that isn't astronomical for a place that isn't tiny is a fun adventure...
