I honestly think The Beach Boys are the most successful band to be complete and utter shit. IMO, they never did ANYTHING good. People go, "Oh, but you gotta listen to Pet Sounds. It's soooooo good." It's just as stupid and useless as all of their other "Oooh, let's go surfing with my girl" shit. Wouldn't it Be Nice was the song that exemplified what I hated about them before I listened to that album. Low and behold, it's the first song on there. Not to mention every song uses the same keyboard and bass lines.

You no longer have my vote for coolest n00b.

I held the same opinion of the Beach Boys through hike school and probably around the same time I was your age (you just turned 21, right?). Brian Wilson's arrangements and melodies are some of THE best in pop music, and music in general. I love the Beatles, but Wilson did things that the Beatles came nowhere near. Yeah yeah, I've heard the "All they sing about is surfing and cars." Welp, have you actually ever REALLY listened to "Surfer Girl"? That song has some of the best vocal harmonies ever written and recorded. I know and love most of the Beach Boys catalogue, and still "Surfer Girl" is in my top 3 songs by the Beach Boys. I'm not saying "Go and listen to all of it.", I'm just saying that the Beach Boys are good. Very, very good.

And I can't believe an ELO fan could say such things. Come on!

I just don't see it. Vocal harmonies on their own do not make a good song. If that were the case we'd all be in A Capella groups instead of knowing how retarded they are. It's like the little icing flowers on the cake. The make it pretty, but if you just sold those people would kick your nuts in. Not to mention vocal harmonies aren't important if the people singing have the some of the most obnoxious voices ever.

The arrangements just seems like they are the same fucking thing over and over again. "Let's just toss a little blippy bloopy, tiddly biddly here and there over the exact same tired rhythms."

It's like John Mayer. Sure, may be able to play guitar pretty well, but that doesn't change the fact that he plays nothing but white, pussy-blues and acouta-pop for fourteen year old girls and I'd rather eat his turds than listen to him sing. Oh wait, I don't see anything mildly good about the Beach Boys, so they don't even live up to that comparison.

EDIT: My point is that Pet Sounds is the critically acclaimed go-to album when people try to defend the Beach Boys and I thought the entire thing was terrible. Like I said, the very first song is the one I thought of when I thought of why I hated the Beach Boys to begin with. The only thing somewhat bearable were the one or two instrumental tracks, if I'm thinking of the right album.

well the thing is, thats not how it is at all. its not the same rhythms, its not all bloopy tiddly bits.
moreover obnoxiousness is subjective. and your opinion on obnoxious voices is rendered moot because you like the mars volta if i recall :P

and the arrangements are BARELY the same. if Leonard Bernstein called Wilson one of the greatest modern composers, you know he knows his shit.

but my thinking as to why you don't think the beach boys are special and revolutionary is that they don't beat you over the head with it. whats your opinion on Marvin Gaye while we're on that subject?

CBA is right.

i didn't like pet sounds my first listen of it. but like gearmond said, it's fucking subtle and once you get into it, it is LOVE.

it sounds like you, like many people, hate pop music for no real reason other than it's pop music. a lot of people feel the same way about rap or country. their loss. :idk:

At one time, I too had a disdain for The Beach Boys..but a concert I saw on TV changed that and gave me a newfound respect for the band. (ok sure it was after Brian Wilson had already had his psychological meltdown and was basically out of the band, but the rest of the band were still great..I think the concert was filmed in..what, maybe the late 80's?)
