I thought the acting was fine, but I just wasn't all that into the character.
Maybe I'd be more into him if there was some sort of extended backstory about him to explain it all.

Exactly.
And all that time spent around the Kyber crystals and studying the teachings of the Jedi in conjunction with his loss of sight would have made him somewhat sensitive to the Force and psychologically would have moved him to give a large part of himself over to putting his faith in the force for damn near everything, particularly after Imperial forces moved in to shut the temple and take the crystals. It's all he's got to fall back on.
