Basswood is softer and dings easier.
as for tonal differences, it's debatable whether or not alder sounds better. I've never noticed a huge difference.

Can add stripes to whatever you want, you know. ;0

That said, tuning is rock solild on my Squier Mascis Jazzmaster as well.

It's decent on both the Squier and MIJ Mustangs and better than decent but not obscenely grand on my Squier VM Jag. And when the VM Jag goes, I've abused it beyond words and still it's generally in relative tune to itself so faking its way through the end of a song isn't hard.

Wood type I've frankly never worried about as long as the guitar sounds good, basswood+poly doesn't ding horribl, and as a sick cripple, some days a lightweight guitar is just the ticket (enter Mustangs.)

i have a mij tlg-70p telecaster. it's very well constructed, sounds great, and looks tacky as hell. i love it. i call it my mother-of-toilet-seat tele. i bought it new at a ridiculously low blowout price in the mid 90s (i believe $200, but no case or bag). the now-defunct venemans music in rockville, md used to have an annual sale where they would dump their overstocks. my gain.

i used it on this song. people wonder how basswood sounds--i don't think you can really tell the difference in a mix. listen from about 5:23 to get the best idea of the sound.
