It's not... Not a factor. Knowing I can flip a thing for what I bought it for makes it easier to justify. But if I really want a specific thing I'll buy it anyway even if I know there's no chance I'll flip it for the same money.

Never think about making a profit on flips lol

I usually buy most impulsively for things I’m a bit interested in for a good enough price that I think I can flip for at least break-even. I’ve had some very good luck, with only a few things at loss/break-even. And a lot of the stuff I’m happy enough to keep, and frankly would have kept more flips except to fund other stuff.

But I wonder about whether I would have been happier researching, demoing, and saving for fewer bits of really special gear. I’m kind of resolved to do that with a Boss SY-1000 this year, demos be damned. I’ve been stalking the Roland/Boss VG/guitar synth space for a while without getting my toes in. Not gonna happen without a deliberate effort on my part.

Knowing I will eventually sell everything, the thought of how easy something might be to sell is relevant. Not just can I make money but more concerned that I will not lose too much and it will move along quick enough so I can move on to the next thing.

I don't have much extra gear except what's on my board - maybe 5 or 6 pedals - so if i buy something i buy it with the aim of using it. That being said, last year i bought and sold a lot of stuff just for the sake of trying it, so i always considered flipability. Usually I tend not to buy things I know are hard to resell unless I'm super convinced, and i plan to break even, or lose just the shipping costs. I don't buy brand new things very often, when i do it's because i am 99% sure that i'm gonna keep it for a while, so i don't mind losing some money in the eventual flip (i.e. i bought the Atmosphere brand new as soon as it came out but got to sell it because of car problems, losing some cash, but if it wasn't for that i would've kept it - luckily my Secret Santa got me another one so the circle is closed).

not at all. i generally buy stuff on the cheap, and only get rid of it if i'm hella broke in which case i usually wind up missing it and not infrequently buying another.

I think of it. Though, it’s not about making profit it’s more about how well something’s going to hold its value. As a generic case, buying the latest Boss “DD” pedal will lose you more money than buying either the Behringer version or the model that’s a slightly older model. For longevity, analog synths are more likely to hold their value in the long run than digital synths (digital’s always going to keep getting better, but analog will always be analog).

This logic is also why I don’t go out of my way to have my gear etched anymore. It looks great, but it’s expensive and it kills the resale value.

I mostly buy used equipment (whenever something is available used). I consider the resale value as one way to know if I'm overpaying for something. I don't mind losing a little money on resales, I consider it like a rental fee.

I do it to the gear I’m never selling. It keeps me from selling it.

A couple Secret Satan gifts I’ve received were special one-off etches. Wasn’t gonna flip ‘em anyway, haven’t flipped other ILFSS gifts, but definitely keeps them in a warm place.

If I was a “forever board” guy, I could definitely see getting my permanent pedals all etched and/or custom painted. But I’m a bit to mercurial on what I use.

i've tried to avoid being the kind of person that worries what their pedals look like but, after some shows we played last year, it became apparent that some photogs really love to snap some pedals+boots so cynically, it might influence which peds i use for certain shows.

Smart!!

I've considered getting some of my keepers that aren't already etched (all the etched ones I have are coincidence) but I like how they look already on the whole. Superego though...

I need to stop buying amp kits, I start with such innocent intentions. I don't have the time or patience to do complete ground up designing an amp, but every time I get my hands on an amp kit, It's a nice fun time until my mind starts wandering on drastic mods.

Edit: Image

Edit 2: Things are getting weird.
