There are countless examples of rock singers with mediocre voices who just compensate with a maximum of attitude and expression.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I still feel very unsure about my voice and I still find it hard to "just give a fuck and do it". I would love to scream and howl like Plant, I could possibly even do it, but I'm still rather shy and don't feel ready to simply try it out. I also mainly use the delay on my voice simply because it makes me feel better about the sound of my voice, even though it fits in the band sound. But I think it would be cooler to not "need" it. All I want to say is it was good for me to say okay and do it and I'd like to encourage everyone to do so, too. We all have issues but we should try to overcome. And in the end, the voice is just another instrument that you need to figure out how to make it work for you. It takes time but it's worth it.

one good thing i can see about singing into reverb/delay is that i’d get a different way of hearing my voice. perhaps that would help.

well, i guess i’ll find out if the Eastwood Wandre is good or not…i signed up for their email list and they’re doing a 20% off everything sale for Saint Patrick’s Day so i shoved it through PayPal Credit. i expect to change the bridge pickup…Goldo makes single-coil and humbucking versions and Eastwood specced a ‘bucker at the bridge. it might be fine, but it doesn’t appear to have the chime illustrated in this demo of a Strat with single-coil Davolis that was built for Henry Kaiser:

http://youtu.be/1xlbF3VAtdI?si=nkYjNv5sCs7hd5th

i’ve been watching a single-coil Davoli on Reverb forever waiting for this to happen. if i’m not feeling the bridge pickup i’ll change it. sorry i had to spend the extra $500, happy it’s in cream which is the only color i like (the other choices are more or less Fiesta Red and Surf/Seafoam Green).

Eastwood claims it’s one of their most popular models, and if that’s true perhaps a good indicator is that i’ve only seen one for sale used in three years.

i’m not enthralled with the Les Trem it comes with, but i’ll see how it plays before considering options. it looks odd, but it’s not as off from the Wandre aesthetic as it originally struck me.

if i go farther into Crazy Boffinhood i could have an aluminum neck made to duplicate the original, but that would be at least a bit wack.

went through the Eastwood site because they have a buyer-dividend thing to see if there’d be anything useful. the fact is that i ordered the Wandre entirely for its pickups; if i could get them in a different guitar shape that’d be fine. my first surprise was that they’ve spun off Airline as a separate company, though i suspect there’s still a connection. those were by far their most interesting designs, though i still think someone should do a proper fiberglass-body Airline/National. the only other thing in their current lineup that really appeals is the Acoustic Black Widow which i’ve seen good demos on and the basses though i’m sure the Ampeg would disappoint. 40 years ago i’d have been excited for their version of Garcia’s “Wolf” guitar, but i’m not looking for that sound any more. almost everything interesting is downgraded by the bog-standard pickups and hardware. and i’m not paying new guitar prices for obscure Japanese designs which are available in the used market at competitive prices. i also find their love for old Univox designs weird because those guitars in my experience were awful. several of them went through the used annex at Guitar Showcase in San Jose in the 00s, and they really weren't good. went for under $200, shelved with the Brownsvilles and other off brands. but Eastwood’s choices have always confused me.

over the years i’ve seen a number of them pass through forums…some were quite good, some were fairly terrible. fingers crossed that this is one of the good ones.

i find it amusing that their collaboration with Warren Ellis has led to an all-sorts line based on the Musicmaster/Duo Sonic. a couple of those are interesting.

the mention of the Black Widow reminds me of Frank Zappa who owned a de-logoed Acoustic, assumedly a BE, that was fretless. he used it like slide guitar…you can hear it on “The Torture Never Stops.”

so needless to say this back-burners everything else in my acquisitions list for some time to come. it won't be as much a month as i was paying a little while ago when amortizing the full replacement of the boards' power supplies and other doo-dads, but it's a bite. i'll have to think about actually saving up for something rather than chucking it into a delayed payment plan. so we'll be taking the rack and keys/synth/drums thing is bite-sized pieces. that may not be a bad thing considering how complicated some of the equipment is/can be...i mentioned the 70-page SPX900 manual (and that's without the additional 30 pages or so of MIDI documentation!), but it took me longer than i like to admit to get everything running through the mixer and rack gear with good signal strength throughout. there was a lot of juggling involved getting the effects level, the individual channels and their fx sends, and the main output level all properly balanced. and when synths start to happen it'll be the same thing. probably start with a Minilogue or Grandmother and work outward from there. happily the next guitar project, the Electromatic Double Jet, has everything needed in place other than proper pickup rings. and obviously i'll pay ahead on the Wandre. i don't think i’ve ever let one of these loans string out for its entire term.
