The rat and duovibe are now off the board and I'm not sure what hes gonna put in their place. I think an HM-2 and something else.

Now it's an HM2, dirge delay, BF2, Supercollider, Noisemaker Nebula, RV3, Tuner. Possibly selling the RV3 for a tap tempo digi delay, and once I fix my hardwire tr7 it'll go back on. Also, possibly an HBE Hematota.

It looks like you've got the exact same traynor head as the one I just got. Care to elaborate on why you prefer the 10s over 12s, ever try that head with a regular 4x12 type cab? You're not using it for bass though are you? If so, that makes perfect sense, scratch the question:)

I've thought about getting a 4x10 for my YBA-1, but mainly for sake of weight/size/convenience, I figured I'd be making some sort of compromise by not going with another 4x12 cab.

Honestly, the cab was a steal and I needed one for the traynor since the marshall is 4ohms for the bassman. I cant really tell a difference between 10s and 12s, but I can tell a huge difference from the 45 degree angled baffles. Standing in front of the cab, your ears aren't bleeding, but when you move further away from it, you can notice how much it fills the room. I love it and wonder why sunn was the only company to do it (that I know of). I only use it for guitar.

I'd imagine the 10s would be more focused and articulate than the 12s, but again, I cant tell a significant difference. I've only been jamming on it for a day so with more practice should come more notes.

I had played the traynor out of a 2x12 before and found it to sound great, but not as round or full as the 6x10, but they weren't played side by side in the same room, so who knows what's really going on.

I don't think id be able to find a difference big enough between a 4x10 and a 4x12 to strictly rule the other out. Id say go for the 10s.

Thanks for that. Been reading/googling around on the subject, and the general consensus seems to be that 10s tend to sound somewhat different. The adjectives 'articulate' and 'focused' do pop up regularly in that regard:p Neither should be better/wors than the other, so I'm giving the edge to the cheapest and smallest, most convenient option, by going with the 4x10. Though if I happen to come across a used 6x10, I'm pretty sure I'll let the convenience thing fly out of the window and grab it. Did you say Sunn was the only company making cabs in that configuration?? So I should bother looking for something similar by peavey, marshall, fender, laney, orange, ampeg,..?

I know carvin also makes a 6x10, but sunn is the only company ive seen with the angled baffles, regardless of size/configuration.
As long as a cab is made of real wood and not particle board, its probably great. The speakers are the real sound/tone factor. Most oranges, for example, are gonna come with celestion v30s and solid wood construction; marshalls-g12 75 and if its older, solid wood construction. Most older fender cabs, however, were pine, vs the overwhelmingly popular birch, which some people love and some people hate; I always thought they looked sort of unstable/wimpy.

Not sure what your situation is, but for myself, the sunn was the cheapest and coolest option for me while still meeting the solid wood criteria. If you can get a sweet deal on an unloaded cab, it may be worth it to scoop that up and do some speaker research to find what would best fit your sonic/fiscal needs/desires.

All that being said, if you come across a sunn 610, I highly recommend purchasing it. I got mine for 300 and right after saw one on my local CL for 260 (still up in the philly area btw). 10s are also cheaper than 12s, but 6 10s costs wayyyyy more than 4 12s.

Unfortunately vintage Sunn gear is somewhat of a rarity here in Europe, I think my best bet is probably to reload whatever good cab I can get a hold of. 'Good' indeed meaning birch ply, the thicker the better. I'm kinda picky when it comes to that sort of thing:)

Should be a fun project to jam six 10s in an oversized 4x12 cabinet. I'm in no hurry, this'd be for my second rig, I still have my old hiwatt 4x12 to get me by:)

The Fender Bassman 4x12 is angled too, but different than the Sunn:

I also have a Sunn 6x10 (Wormdirt's old one :yay:

) and I have to second what muff said about how it projects. Once you take a few steps back it truly reveals itself. I have it paired with a 4x12 and it's best of both worlds. The point in the room where the lows of the 4x12 start to drop off is where the 6x10 really kicks in.

Muff, thought of running Bassman/Traynor two amp setup?

At this point, I feel like the two sound so incredibly different that running them at the same time would be like having two snare drums on the kit. You can do some cool stuff, but it's not really necessary or practical for my usage. I like each of them for radically different reasons, and I feel that putting them together is more hassle than its worth. I got some shit from the doom forum about phasing out the bassman and relying on the clean from the traynor; if I could keep em all, I certainly would, but right now a two amp setup is such overkill for me, as is owning two amps if I can get close to one with the other.

Im trading the bassman to my tech for some work and some goodies, I'm certain ill miss it, but they're not a high-priced gem either, so another can be obtained easily.

Ill have to try the 610 with a 412 now though...Your description sounds like a dream.

Yeah, I hear you about the two amp setup. Pretty much the same reason I traded my Sound City recently. Tone of my Sunn Beta was just too sweet on its own to stack it with something different. And as cool as the Sound City is, not quite at a point I can collect vintage gear I'm not gonna use. Plus I got my own 610 out of the trade :joy:
