And now let's all thank the Supreme Court for further subverting what's left of our democracy.

North Dakota’s 2017 voter law ID was challenged by Native residents who alleged that the law disproportionately blocked Native Americans from voting. In April, a federal district court judge blocked large portions of the law as discriminatory against Native voters. “The State has acknowledged that Native American communities often lack residential street addresses,” Judge Daniel Hovland wrote. “Nevertheless, under current State law an individual who does not have a ‘current residential street address’ will never be qualified to vote.” According to the website of the Native American Rights Fund, which represents the plaintiffs, many native residents lack residential street addresses because “the U.S. postal service does not provide residential delivery in these rural Indian communities.” As a result, tribal IDs use P.O. boxes, which are not sufficient under North Dakota’s new law—a specification that seems designed to disenfranchise native voters. Hovland’s ruling was in place during the primaries this spring.
So, normally I support voter ID laws because of the accessibility of government-issued ID, but this is super fucked.

Gotta give it to the federal government, still finding ways to fuck with Native Americans in 2018 and beyond:

Ah, yes, the accessibility of voting-booth-approved government-issued ID in the United States, a country that has fervently opposed the idea of a national identification card whenever it's been brought up.

And, less obliquely, if you do not have a drivers' license, a government-issued photo ID (in the US) becomes rather difficult to get, in both the physical sense of getting to the buildings where you can get A) a state ID card or B) a passport -- which, incidentally, you do not have a right to, so you can just as easily not get a passport if you apply for one -- as well as the legal sense: i.e. you live in one of the 7 states that nearly requires a photo ID or one of the other 10 states that really really really would prefer you have one when it comes to voting.

Yeah, I've never understood this, either.
When I was in Romania everyone had ID. They found it weird that I didn't have any beyond my passport.

Also, I mean, you need ID to do so much here, so I've never understood the pushback against ID.
Want to buy beer? You need ID.
Want to drive? You need ID.
Want a bank account? You need ID.
Need a job? You need ID.

What can you do without ID other than buy stuff with cash?

Also, here's a solid paragraph of just "ID" because I've used it so much:
ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID ID

Not to get super off topic, but where'd you go in Romania? Bucharest?

Yes.
Also, Brașov, Sighișoara, Târgoviște, Sibiu, Buzău, Sinaia.
Basically, all around central Romania.

Very cool. And, hey, for thread-context, they just spent like 40 million euro trying to get same sex marriage repealed, which failed.

I was listening to a little piece about that marriage thing on NPR and they played a clip of a local dude explaining why he had come down to the polls to vote in favor of the repeal. In slow labored english he goes "I don't like, ehhh, man with man and ehh, woman with woman." It cracked me up because thats basically the same argument that was tossed around here in the USA. Dude nobody asked if you like watching two guys fuck, its about taxes and hospital visitation and all the boring shitty parts of marriage. Theyre still gonna fuck, bro. Short of you going door to door yelling "NO HOMO" and slapping dicks outta dudes mouths, theyre still gonna fuck.
