I love how for a couple of pages this thread was just lighthearted discussion and jokes, then a couple of people decide to be dicks and suddenly it's the topic's fault and not those people.

No. Fuck that. We should be able to talk about anything without getting butthurt that someone doesn't agree. I hate the attitude that we can't talk about controversial things.

But whatever. Blame the topic. Let's just lock the thread instead of saying "Hey, don't be a dick" or just ignoring them and continuing the civil discussion that was happening before.

I'm not butthurt from the discussion, but I do have butthurt.

Ideally, yeah, you should be able to talk about whatever, controversial or trivial. But more often than not it quickly spirals into a disaster. "Hey, don't be a dick" becomes "YOU ARE THE FUCKING SCUM OF THE EARTH, I'M GONNA BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN" and it's a mess usually not able to be salvaged. It's stupid internet drama. Not the thread's fault, but this kind of discussion very easily goes south. I know what you mean, it would be NICE to be able to talk about it, but on the Internet it more often than not turns into a big fight, and I don't mean academic debate.

"This topic is stupid and it needs to go away" is just easier. I'm biased though. In "real life" if you want to go there...well, whatever. On the Internet it's "oh god, not this shit again" because I've seen it so many times.

Wow, this went downhill after I made my contribution. Oh well.

No the topic isn't stupid. Everyone, read he topic title, it says so. The topic is all right, we're acting stupid.

People have the tendency to enjoy discussion and argument, too, it's educating. The History of Western Philosophy is made of that and kids are - to my best knowledge - taught rhetorics and argument in school. There should be no need to get uncivil, no need to be nasty and stray from treating each other here as brothers in fuzz.

I don't want to see this forum become a lukewarm conformity zone protected by sticking to fucking tea time niceties, trying nonchalantly to avoid issues and topics so somebody might feel hurt. Read Fahrenheit 451, it's actually important to not just agree. In everyday life.
