today was a very strange and interesting day, more so than i originally expected. today was the software test; before i went downtown to deal with that, the orange tabby parlor guitar arrived. it's an Egmond made in the Netherlands, and came to me by way of an eBayer in St. Louis.

i'll need to do a couple of things with it. the tuners need ferrules, and i'll probably carve an ebony bridge to supplement the (moveable) plastic one that's currently there. but it's a charming little thing that'll make a perfect travel guitar. it came with a chipboard case, too, which was a very pleasant surprise.

so then i headed downtown to take the software test. i think i did better on this one than the previous one, but i don't know for sure. they'll call tomorrow and give me the test results. the result will probably determine whether i stay here or go, so i'm rather on tenterhooks, but all i can do is let go of it and trust that the right thing will happen, whatever it is.

i discovered while plonking around on the interwebz that the Art Institute--the main art museum in Chicago--was having its weekly free evening, so given the choice of heading home at 5PM or taking in the masterpieces i naturally chose art and had a lovely-but-exhausting couple of hours hanging with the Medieval->18th century European art. i have a new favorite painting there, Rubens' Saint Francis, and there was a truly marvellous little Rembrandt etching that was stunning, maybe 4x6 inches if that. i spent a few minutes in the old Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Floor, an installation from the magnificent Sullivan and Adler Old Stock Exchange which tragically was torn down in the 70s for a parking garage.

Had surgery today to remove some soft tissue tumors from my left foot. The surgery actually turned out to be quite easy and took way less time than anyone expected. I might even be on my feet earlier than my doctor predicted, since he didn't have to scalpel my foot that much.

when i had no legs left i left for home. as i descended into the Monroe Street subway station, i heard this gorgeous ambient flanged guitar music floating up the stairs. as i reached the platform level i found that there was a middle-aged black man on the platform with an eight-stringed Schecter and a portable setup with a looper and some other DigiTech stomps doing a three-chord cycle that went C->Em->D, then improvising over it in little snippets of melody and singing unamplified vocals which sounded spiritual in nature from what i could hear. it was so beautiful that i gave him all the change i had in my pockets and told him his music was very beautiful. he thanked me, and i said "thank YOU." so i sat down on the floor and listened to him for about ten minutes while i waited for the train. as i got up to get on the train he waved to me; i gave him the Asian/Islamic folded hands/bow, which he returned. then i got on the train and listened to Heim by Sigur Ros as i rode out to the end of the line...the last notes of "Von" faded away just before i reached the station and i put my headphones away, got off the train, went to my truck, started it up and drove home.

at the end of the trip i felt strangely emotional in the same way i'd felt since arriving at the museum...this was the first time since i wqas a kid that i'd been to the Art Institute non-stoned, and some of the paintings and other art really affected me emotionally. i felt like i was going to crack open and either weep or dissolve in a ball of light. now i'm at home, weary, drained, and not knowing what to do next other than pray and hope that the right thing happens, whatever it might be. my wonderful kitty met me at the door, giving me a little squeak as i greeted her. i guess tomorrow i'll find out whether i'm to stay or to go. i tried, and i did the best i could.

That sounds amazing. I wish I had a art museum within an hour that I could go to. I've been to the art institute, but it's been over 10 years since I went. I remember it being awe-inspiring.
