exactly. i made about 50k last year, but almost half of that goes to rent and another huge chunk to debt service of various sorts. before i met Becky and she started sending shopping bags full of pre-frozen meals and groceries home with me i'd be dead broke 65% of the time and have a whole $80 in extra income for one check due to paying rent and my celly bill. if they send out $1600 i could be jolly and buy an amplifier, but in reality will use that to pay off the car loan on the first Matrix which was destroyed in the black-ice wreck November before last on which the insurance had lapsed and for which the bank is suing me. it won't cover all of it, but it'd leave about $600 to pay off which i can manage from my monthly disposable income. $50k sounds like a ton of money if you're impoverished, but in reality it's equivalent to about 16k in 1985 dollars. i my car is 17 years old, and all my furniture was given to me or salvaged from the building trash.

i can't even imagine paying the price of a nice, well-made new sofa. that much money would keep me stocked with weed for at least 6 months, and i smoke a LOT. i could buy a damn AVRI Jazzmaster or a couple of Newark Street Guild archtops and have snack money left over.

just don't get me started on the minimum wage falling behind the inflation rate since the mid-70s. in my late teens my gf and i both had minimum wage jobs, butcould afford a decent enough apartment, go to concerts regularly, eat out when we pleased, drive a functional car, and have a yearly road trip. nowadays two mw jobs can't even rent a studio apartment, much less live. we've literally turned into a 3d world country as far as economics are concerned. i hope Biden's $15 plan goes through, but if indexed to ninflation the mw would be like $22.50, which is more than i make an hour.

Canada’s minimum wage is only around $14 so I can’t see any way the US could get itself together to get to the same amount (sounds like socialism!!!). People on the right made the same arguments (your hamburger gonna be $37!!) as Republicans and guess what..... it didn’t happen!

I remember TWENTY YEARS AGO the Canadian minimum wage was $6.85/h. I made $7.50 and when I moved to a job that paid $15 it felt like more money than I could imagine. I hope Canada knocks it up to $20 or more.... now I can’t even imagine the minimum wage being able to allow someone to live even remotely comfortably a city like Toronto.

Well it’s also the same people that want to allow monopolies and eliminate laws on price gouging....

Then there is the whole inflation vs military spending vs corporate tax breaks vs debt issues.... :picard:

if we decomissioned half of the Navy it would be enough to send every kid in America to college or vocational training. the level of military overcapacity passed absurdity decades ago and now has assumed monumental proportions. the US has an Air Force, a Navy air arm, Marine tactical aviation, a air arm of the Coast Guard, and a Space Force. not to mention CIA/NSA black site activity, the immigration police, NOAA's weather gatherers, NASA, and the US Forest Service. we literally have more aircraft carriers than every other nation on earth combined. fucking Eisenhower, of all people, tried to warn us about the "military/industrial complex." nobody was listening. you could cut US military spending in half and still have a material advantage sufficient to retain hegemony. back in the age of Global Thermonuclear War they used to joke about "making the rubble bounce."

Never really liked Senses Fail, but this song seems to annoy the centrists/right-wingers on YT so I fuck with it.

Lindsey Graham can't retire. Trump has the goods on Graham's closeted homosexuality and activities. what do you think they were talking about on that trip to the golf course? this is said to be an open secret in the DC gay scene. one wishes for an exception to the principle that gays don't out gays.
