I know about the Kevin Shields trick of taping the arm, but I remember an ILFer saying here that he had sold a JM with a "stupidly extra long tremolo bar" that he struggled to find. Have you guys heard of something like that?

By long do you mean the length that it extends towards the neck, or extra long like it protrudes more from the trem arm socket away from the body? Either way I think your best bet would be to get one custom-machined.

The arm from my 64 JM seems a bit longer than the AVRI arms.

i think they are quite long to begin with. i've not heard of an extra extra long bar. perhaps he was just referring to the stock arm as being extra long compared with others.

Hey, thanks all. From what I gather around, vintage 60s jazzmaster ones might be a little longer (toward the neck I meant) than jag/jm avri reissues.

I remember reading an interview with shields where he explains the trem arm thing. Apparently he stuffed the trem arm pocket with tape to raise it up from the strings to get more room to strum and use the trem arm. So from what I can gather the trem arm is raised up from the strings as apposed to being "longer".

I'll dig out the interview in a few hours, have to go to practice in a few minutes.

Yeah Kevins was raised up and barley in the socket... I found a generic tone arm for mine at a local shop and when I hold the tip and strum my hand is over the bottom of the neck... It's taller too so I have it screwed all the way in and it works for me... The new Johnny Marr has grommets in the socket so it wont swing around but you can do the same thing by wrapping that white plumbers tape over the threads, works great and easy to change once it starts to suck...
