i'm thinking this can't be good. once the stock market and its growth-at-any-cost metric gets applied to Fender, kiss quality goodbye. as well as Gretsch, Guild, Sunn, and all the other ancillary marques Fender carries that aren't necessary to the mission.

i find it intriguing that in a world where guitar-players love to speculate on company workings, nobody seems to notice that FMIC (Fender Musical Instrument Corporation) is doing all the things Gibson did to itself to ruin its reputation in the last 15 years or so. they've been putting out US-made product of increasingly variable quality for increasingly silly prices, undercutting their own overpriced major brand with good-quality Asian-made secondary brands, focusing increasingly on high-priced Custom Shop work and signature models rather than on quality product for the regular market, and bastardizing their classic designs in ways that take away much of what made them great to begin with.

I did notice. Whenever they had that huge price increase a couple years back I realized just how severe they're trying to do it.
