Would you buy this? Bass VI tele...

So, I found this tonight. SERIOUSLY thinking of buying it. Like don't even care.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TELE-STYLE-SHOR ... 378wt_1214

It looks mostly structurally sound, but I have a few concerns:

Headstock looks a little rough. Do you think its sturdy enough to last a good while, or do you think there is something I might be able to do to reinforce what is already there if you don't think its enough?

Hairline crack in neck pocket

The guitar is strung with a custom set of combined bass and guitar strings, gauges approximately 84-72-56-44-34-24.

Thoughts? Yes? No?

It's a tough call to buy a one off without playing it first.

It looks pretty neat.

He says it's only a finish crack. If you're really concerned, you can ask him for some close up photos.

What are your concerns about the headstock? It's not gonna get a chance to implode before you flip it.

Hahahahaha

I think some of the dowel fillers seem a little rough, but thats about it. I must admit I've slowed down flipping a little the past month or so haha

Ha ha, yeah, I just took a second look at that headstock. On closer inspection, it does look pretty rough.

If you're really interested, have him take some more photos of the headstock. It's worth getting a better look at. You can always reinforce it with a piece of veneer or something.

I just took a third look. I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this, skullservant.

He says "The neck is nice and straight and in excellent structural condition and good cosmetic shape. The bass tuner hole plugs are lightly visible ..."

Those plugs hole are more than "lightly visible" and while he says the neck's "in excellent structural condition", it looks like there may be a split in it.

Take a look again at the back of the neck.

Yeah it seems like the seam is realllly visible. And I definitely agree that those peg holes are WAY more than slight

Not saying that a neck can't be split and still be structurally sound, but his description doesn't seem quite accurate.

Eh, I'll leave it. MAYBE ONE DAY I CAN BUILD MY OWN. I mean it really doesnt seem that hard to move a bridge down and fill some holes/put a new nut/tuners in

I don't see why you'd need to fill holes anyway.. most bass peg heads are big enough to fit two guitar tuners on them somewhere...

Was thinking of throwing 2 guitar tuners on my Squier P bass and getting a new nut bridge and pickup, but I think the Squier P is 32" scale instead of 30. I guess thats why most people convert mustangs

It's probably a good call that you passed on this.

Beyond the fact that it looks like the body is from a guitar that retailed for $60 at Walmart, the string gauges seem all wrong.

0.084" tuned to a standard E on a 30" scale is going to be so floppy that it probably wouldn't intonate properly. It would probably be effected by the pickup's magnetic pull, and have ghost notes and strange warbling. And without enough tension on the string, good luck with tuning stability.

Repeat after me: Short scale basses require thicker strings than standard scale basses to tune to the same pitch.

:idk: I personally think it would be fine and a good idea as long as you can make the chords work with your hands:thumb:

One thing though... when/if you do a bass>guitar bridge conversion make sure the bridge will be tall enough... most strat style bridges aren't.
