I would go with the Ibanez Jetking and the Vox AC4TV. The Jetking is probably one of the nicest sounding, playing and looking guitars I've played in the under $1000 range. Love it. The Vox AC4TV looks solid. Class A. Tube. 10 inch speaker. Don't think you can go wrong.

If you're not hung up on the name on the headstock, Xaviere guitars are pretty good. They all use GFS pickups. I have an older model of the XV-700, and every I know likes its playability.

Hows the neck? Any frets hanging out?

I'd go with the squire tele OR strat (only cause they're CHEAP used), and the vox. Have you looked at the Blackeart amps? Or for a little more the Blackstar amp? I'd personally spend more on the amp than the guitar... But it's just MO. As long as the guitar feels right... It can be tweaked, amps... Not as much.

My friend got a Jet King. He did a little bit of maintenance, and now he says it's his primary axe. I've always been a tele man, but if I were in your predicament I'd probably go with the Jet King and be an original gangsta.

Not on mine. The neck is bound. The XV-700 is a cool little thing. It's shaped like a Zematis, but it has the belly cut like a strat. And it is thin and light.

I don't think the strats and teles are bound, but I'm sure the little Korean kids file those things down.

I'm in the Vox AC4tv camp right now. I'd go with a used strat of some sort cause I'm a strat guy. Used used used used, if you want to keep costs down.

Updated. Also what is the tone difference of alder and Agathis?

agathis is sorta like a cheap mahogony, so I guess you could say its darker/warmer compared to alder which is usually described as "bright"

I won't say don't get agathis because its a cheap wood, but it is hard to judge because it is usually used in budget guitars so its hard to tell if its the wood or the way the guitar was put together/other parts used

I say go for alder, if you want something like mahogony save up for a real mahogony guitar.

Well out of those guitar the tone best suited for you would probably be the Jet King. All though to properly achieve that tone you'll want a guitar with some p-90s, a company called Vintage makes a nice cheap p-90 special guitar. Can't seem to find a link though...
