Any Stand-up fans?

Listening to stand-up during the daily commute is about the only reason I arrive at/return from work in anything close to an acceptable mood. I've pretty much dug to the depths of the Spotify well, though.... Or I think I have.

Who makes you laugh, whether it's to tears or just a low rumble in the crevice where your soul should be?

I fucking love stand up. I have some favorite but I'm pretty egalitarian about it. It's such a gift. There aren't many people that can bring a room together and get every body to laugh!
I used to think it was kind of elitist and egotistical. But that all changed when I saw Doug Stanhope over a decade ago. Amazing show! He's still one of, if not my favorite. If I listen to him too much though I get a little tired of his 'I drank this and did something super crazy' formula for bits. I prefer his more mean spirited offensive yet astute jokes as opposed to drunken nonsense.

I've been on a big Jim Norton kick lately. I will say, I think he's funnier on radio than on the stage. I spend a lot of time listening to old Opie & Anthony bits. The Chip Chipperson Podcast is easily my favorite thing to come out of 2017.

My recent favorite is Christina P's special. I love her podcast too.

I love seeing when comedians get a chance to act and actually show their range. Jim Florentine on LOUIE was an amazing appearance. Dice was in a Woody Allen movie recently (eh but not).

Might be seeing the great Jim Breuer this Wednesday...

IMO NYC *Comedy Cellar regular* comics > *
The Comedy Store is also a fertile ground as is Boston, in general.

The generation currently in their 40s and 50s, mostly. Rock, Chappelle, Burr, CK, Nick DiPaolo, Joe Rogan, Colin Quinn, Bob Kelly, Jim Norton, Rich Vos, Keith Robinson, Doug Stanhope, Jim Florentine, Greg Fitzsimmons, JOEY MF DIAZ, Ari Shaffir...and several who are no longer around. Mitch Hedberg, Greg Giraldo, Patrice O'neal, Richard Jeni, Ralphie May...

Also shoutout to the 90s Def Jam legends...before it became caricatured: Jamie Foxx, DL Hughley, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, Damon Wayans, Wanda Sykes, Eddie Griffin, Martin Lawrence...Katt Williams...so much talent.

100%. Anyone on 'Tough Crowd' or 'The Opie & Anthony Regulars' kid of translates to that generation. Any of the regulars on Joe Rogan, I enjoyed the Chris Delia specials. I like Whitney Cummings too...sue me.

Tommy Davidson and Damon Waynes are other guys with tremendous acting range (needless to say Jamie Foxx too...he's just an incredibly gifted performer). IN LIVING COLOR is responsible for lots of my all time favorite sketches. Tommy Davidson deserves an award for his portrayal as Michael Jackson

A lot of comedians on MAD TV from the 2003 - 2007ish years are VERY funny too.

Lots of funny people out there.

Yeah, fully agree Yimmy is 200% funnier off the cuff "on air" than on stage. He and Cumia both are so sharp in the moment, carrying either one around in NYC might get you charged with keeping a concealed weapon. My fav O&A era is the mid-late 00s when they were back on terrestrial radio and on thin ice, having to approach *sensitive topics* in creative ways to avoid getting dumped before hitting the air waves. Hearing the early development of Chip, Ted & Uncle Paul was some of the funniest shit I've ever heard.

Also HUGE nod to Jay Mohr, cant believe I forgot to mention that legend

I legitimately stopped watching Comedy Central when they canceled and shelved Tough Crowd to push Kid Notorious and Wanda Does It, plus other barely remembered, short-lived slot-fillers. It's part of the reason why my jimmies stay rustled over politically correct bullshit. There will likely never again be genuine chemistry on tv, like there was in TC.

I agree with you 100% on Jimmy and Anthony...but from their time on XM/Sirius...this is the work of a comedic genius

BTW - I re watched all of TC pretty recently...I must of burned 500 calories laughing.

CQ prob makes me laugh harder than anyone else, he's funnier in a bombing-spiral than most comics are when on-fire.
Also, unmatched references when smashing his pals and peers.

The banter on Tough Crowd was like no other. Colin Quinn shitting on Rich Vos (who, as you said, is VERY FUNNY on stage. If you only heard of him through O&A you would think he was a complete dumb ass). Patrice VS DiPaolo was the best!

I miss Tough Crowd a bunch, but for some reason, I just can't get into any of CQ's albums. Or maybe it was just the newest one that seemed like he was reaching hard and missing the mark.

$sharktoootth - If you like Whitney Cummings, check out Rachel Feinstein... I don't know how she succeeded being associated with Amy Schumer, but, she's hilarious.

Glad to see some of the depraves mentioned... Derek Sheen might be up the alley for any Stanhope fans.

Oh yeah, add to the list of legends no longer with us.. Bill Hicks. I loved the spite.

I love Bill Burr. I think his podcast is pretty awesome too. But he has been my favorite for 8 years or so.
Although with my new position at work I haven't been able to listen to it much the past 6 months.
I could probably listen to anything by Carlin from 88 forward still.
