Last year I got a lollar imperial standard wound bridge pickup for my 78 Ibanez artist 2619. This pickup is so sick. It’s balanced and clear across the spectrum in a way I haven’t experienced before. The low end is insane. I can’t believe a pickup makes this big of a difference. It’s huge. The volume is really balanced from high to low. Pick attack is crazy articulate and the dynamics are great. It hits a dirt pedal in a really open and uncompressed way that is so different from higher output pickups. It has really pushed me to be a better player. Any sloppiness, particularly of the picking hand really comes through and I’ve really had to tighten that up, so that’s a definite caveat.

So I’m definitely into lower output fancy pants PAF style humbuckers. It wasn’t cheap. I spent around $120 used for a single pickup, but that’s cheaper than about any pedal I’ve bought recently and the result was incredible. I might try to get a fralin PAF to put in my other old Ibanez artist to compare.

I have a set of the regular wind Imperials in my SG and they sound great but I put a set of the low wind Imperials in my LP Standard and they take all the qualities of the regular winds and just make them better. So articulate and take as much gain as I can throw at it without falling apart. They definitely make me realize my right hand isnt as tight as I thought it was. They've quickly become my favorite pickup ever. I want to swap by BLK TRI torches out in my other LP for the low winds. I have a Custom with the Tim Shaw pickups and they don't sound as good as the Lollars.

That’s cool to hear about the low winds. I was thinking about trying one in the monson. They say they’re good for thin, light guitars that tend to be darker or muddy. That well describes the monson and it’s never been great with higher output “metal” pickups.
