Maybe, but people're still gonna continue to hold prejudices no matter how much legislation is passed to try to discourage it.

Not sure what you mean. Their fault that I think their school sucks? No. Their fault that they enrolled in a program for a terminal degree where the school's reputation is in the toilet? Yes.spacelordmother wrote:And that is the applicants fault?Invisible Man wrote:Agreed, for better of for worse. I disqualify applicants all the time based on the fact that they went to degree mills (not implying that about you, though, Connie). Did it about a dozen times earlier today. But I don't tell them that. And it isn't because of rivalries or 'taste.' I just think for-profit schools are terrible.
I'm hiring professors and deans right now. Whether we like it or not, academe trades in 'prestige.' If you got an Ed.D from Argosy, Phoenix, Capella, Walden, or a host of for-profit schools, yeah, that's kinda on you.
This doesn't apply when looking at fresh grads of four-year degrees applying to first jobs--it's a different animal. Hope that helps clarify my thinking.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

No, I agree. I mean, sure there are cases where a fantastic applicant made some shitty decisions back when they were younger, but all other things equal there's no way a degree mill will come close to a more competitive institution.
But I'm pretty sure the person that rejected me just went to a rival school or something.

I should have stayed in academia, at least the posturing there is backed in papers.

Well, at least now you're in a good location to position yourself for reentry into that realm.Inconuucl wrote: I should have stayed in academia, at least the posturing there is backed in papers.

So...basically, this ,^^^. Being a dick is part of hiring (I.e., not everyone gets hired, and someone has to make that determination).Inconuucl wrote:It's not illegal at all, it's even encouraged. Being discriminatory about education is a cornerstone of American work culture.
Inconuu, we should talk if you're struggling on the market. Are you looking at industry or academe? I probably can't help a lot and won't patronize you, but can at least commiserate. Took me three years to land a full-time gig.

What field are you looking for work in?

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
My current living situation is really weird, but very good. Except! I am sharing my bedroom with another person who is also just staying here for the month before moving away from town. This would be fine, except she is dating another person who has lived here for the last year. And that would also be fine, except every night they sleep in her bed about 15 feet from me and whisper and make out. While there is an empty bed room upstairs. They're fucking right now. And that's awesome. I just wish they could do it in the empty bedroom that actually has a door, rather than the living room where my bed is.

This is a pretty accurate summary of the source text for the quotepsychic vampire. wrote:hell is other lesbians.

Yeah... that's the joke, 'cus Sartre did the gloriously misunderstood "L'enfer, c'est les autres/Hell is other people" bit in No Exit, so, you know, that's the 'probably'... C'mon guy. Its supposed to be funny. Humor me?
