Yeah I discovered it this weekend while I was trying to replicate the 'time stretching' thing I had read about. Try it with a long loop, like 6-10 seconds. If you mute N2 & N3 then just stretch/compress the time with the +/- 10 BPM you'll notice it right away.

solo tunes:
completed works || loosey goosey releases
associated acts:
Raab Zamboni (fake jazz/real noise//sax, modular synth, editing, misc) || Field Guide (my best friends//sax on 2 tracks)

I make t-shirts, patches, koozies, buttons, CDs, sometimes tapes, and eventually i'll start working on pedals again. DM me for pricing!

So, you could say that it stretches the time, but not the loop? A time stretch. You could argue that, but it's maybe not what people had in mind...

Maybe there's a hidden feature, or one that they simply forgot to add to the manual? Maybe the v1 doesn't have it? Aah, conspiracies!

baremountain wrote: Comparing it to the Ct5 tho seems kinda pointless because there are features it shares with each of the modes. You could theoretically make it act like a Ct5 would in mode 1 or 3, but that's ignoring half of the features of the 856 to do something most of us already have a dedicated piece of hardware for (the Ct5 itself). This thing is its own box of magic that kind of makes its own game rather than adhering to rules that are already in place.
The 'comparison' is that some of the ideas were present in the Ct5, just like some of the ideas in the Ct5 were present in the Goodbye 24 (idk if you were lurking when those were being built), which is -- in a similar sense -- Mode 1 of the Ct5.

The evolution of the idea behind these pedals (from GB24>Ct5>856) is the most interesting aspect of this particular pedal to me -- because I only need/use the GB24, which I realized after I bought (and later sold) one of the V1 Ct5s.

Hope that helps explain the thought process :)

I totally feel ya there - it's a useful analogy for sure. But it falls off pretty quick when you get into the actual utilization and workflow of the 856 (which I would guess is slightly less true from the GB24 to the Ct5's Mode 1). That's all I was trying to get at. I think there are a lot of misconceptions of what all the 856 does and how it works - you could, in theory get something like Mode 3 of the Ct5, but it would be a different flavor on the 856 due to the differences in how each machine deals with time and granularity. All time-related functions of the 856 are relative to the absolute loop length (post-tempo adjustments) and it won't necessarily just cycle on to the next repeat of the loop. Again, it can be made do this, but you've gotta dial that kind of behavior in deliberately unless you're on Note set 1. For instance, if you set it to play a full loop (length=L) pitched up one octave, by default it would stop playing after one repetition (L=1/2), wait the same length of time it took to play the loop at 2x speed (L=1/2), and *then* it would repeat that pitched up version of the loop once time L has been reached. This is, of course assuming a few things about the position of other knobs/switches, but is just an example of a difference between the 856 and Mode 3. I hope that makes sense.

 it makes no sense at all to me but I don't have an 856 or a Ct5 in front of me to really see what you're saying.

Care to chime in on the time stretch theory, Scott?

I swear I remember reading it. Might have been in the ct5 thread...some one asked about stretching the loop without changing the pitch and scot said it was gonna be something on the 856

So I realized this is theoretically possible with MIDI. Plug a controller in and send just a note (through channel 1) that's lower than 48 - 36 should be 1/4 speed, 24 should be 1/8 speed, etc. A MIDI note will trigger the loop (w all transformations currently set) to play once. Let me know if that accomplishes the desired effect!
I would totally try this on mine but it's in Canada getting its Free/Quant/Skip switch repaired :(

ya that is from quite a ways back i think and not in this thread. there is no time stretching because it is too cpu intesive and you lose ability for any polyphony so we just stick to having polyphony since it is pretty fundamental to the device (having many layers/notes). sorry for any confusion but it was not advertised at the launch and not in any of the demo vids/manual provided at launch.

I mean you could sell your 856 and have enough coin to pick up the Ableton Suite and another 856 when they're back in stock and you'll have the best of both worlds. :p

Roll call for anyone with an 856 *and* an Organelle - I have a prototype of a control patch that might be ready for testing! Let me know if you fall into this category (I can't imagine there are many of us).
I can't test it myself because my 856 is still out for repair :(
