Modding a cheap delay to become a Bit reducer?

I remember a thread on the VSE forums that claimed that by adjusting (popping open the casing and turning something with a screw driver) the timing on delay pedals beyond their maximum delay time would result in a bit crusher like effect? Anyone else ever heard, or tried a similar thing?

There should be a trim pot in there somewhere. If you crank it, you can extend the length of the delay at the cost of reduced fidelity. I'm not sure quite how lo-fi it gets, though... depends on the delay, I guess.

Yep, I've done it to my DOD analog delay. It crushes down to a point where your delayed signal is usually a different note than your dry signal.

The trim pot was REALLY easy to find, it was a great big round thing with a little screw slot in it...

hmmm

I have an Arion digital delay I bought for about 20 bucks...
I never liked the length I got with it ...too short.
I'll see if maybe I can try it, then I'll get back to you.

I know one of the digi pds (2 footpedals) pedals is really known for doing an extremely long delay thats crushed to all hell with a few twists of the trim. not that thats much help.

I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to do on the dano fab delay. Just switch out one resistor (they're small mind you, smd) with a high 500k or greater pot. Shit they're 10 bucks, could be a cool project. I think i'm going to try it tomorrow.

ok, so I tried it....
didn't get that bit-crushing awesomeness, but did extend the delay with some extra noise....

I did, however, find the second trim pot was for range. So I lowered the delay time and extended the range. Now it goes from normal length delay all the way down to impossibly short reverb. At about 7 o' clock on the length knob I get this awesome inside-a-hose reverb....

so...I suppose this isn't the pedal for you, I haven't really seen them around much more anyway.

I know its been a long time, but I'd figured I'd post a follow up reply. I just increased the delay time on my Johnson Ead-2 using the above advice, I'm still able to get the normal *usable delays, but if I turn the knob past 2 oclock a decimated ring mod sound similar to my antenna starts occur in a slowly repeating cycle. The first note I play will be rather clean, but afterwards it goes all to hell in a good way. In conclusion it makes the johnson far more interesting to me than it normally would be.
