The theme of PP having a crush on CB while bullying him and/or inviting herself on dates, to holiday dinner & events spans movies, shorts and decades. Charlie Brown himself seems to be the poster child for clinical depression. Linus has some kind of security/abandonment issues or something that prevents him from going anywhere without his blanket. Lucy is obviously a sociopath, and also plays the dual role of being the group psychiatrist (as well as Linus' chief antagonist), Patty probably has BPD, Schroeder appears to have OCD, and Marcie is clearly a lesbian, which back then was probably still considered a mental disorder. Pig Pen is the poor kid I guess, which isn't a mental problem per se but can lead to the development of an inferiority complex.
This is the kind of shit that I've thought about since I was about 12. Probably says more about me than Charles Schulz.![]()

A good story/movie is a good story/movie, whether animated, drawn or filmed in real life.
I’ll gladly concede that movies ‘made for kids’ are usually lazy cash-grabs because why bother making a good movie if it’s for kids who wouldn’t know a plot hole if they fell in one.

Re: i don't trust them if....
@Bloodhammer I, too have thought about this a bit
My pre-internet childhood memories are still mostly vivid, even intense...and RFYLCB and BVCB got major play.
I've probably seen them 100x each, 80ish% of which before I was 12. They're only about an hour long each iirc, maybe 70min so I'd usually watch them back to back.
Sure, there is more productive use of free time but that kind of familiarity begets insight, esp with an accessible IP like Peanuts.
There is real genius in how Schultz used Snoopy & Woodstock to say things without plainly-stating them. Also how surrealistic yet relatable its overall presentation, with serious situations alongside innocuous humor and pure joy, without lecturing the viewer, rarely an adult character being on screen, let alone speaking legibly. The wah-wah'd horn teacher voice still makes me smirk & snicker...a running gag the comic strip cant pull off in print.
Having said all that, I have not (yet?) seen the Peanuts movie. I'll probably watch it some day but the music of the cel-animated content is so essential I've yet to make time for the 3d, which has a whole other vibe. Sort of. Also I've had this thing where I haven't been supporting Hollywood reboot/remakes/recycling for ~5 years so...it aint a priority.

jebus.
maybe i'm getting softer as i get older (anti.... giggety?), but while media with animal violence has always bothered me so much more than human punch and stabbies, i just can't watch anything cruel to puppos and kits and floofs and buns and rarrrrrs any more.

The animal cruelty is merely the gateway to the misery of the main story of psychologically damaged and lost characters traversing the bleak English countryside while inadvertently fucking things up for themselves in the worst possible ways.

So you can't trust me because I don't like kid movies or because I saw a dude masterbating during a kid movie?Olin wrote:Thanks for saying exactly what I wanted to sat while I'm at work and unable to type much on a phone.vidret wrote:This makes me big time not trust you jwar.

I'm not sorry for disliking something btw. I don't like kid movies. They annoy the fuck out of me. I have three kids that are constantly watching the shit and it's not fun anymore. It's obnoxious and I believe most kid movies are now influencing children in negative ways by inserting adult content into them as if kids are stupid.

Many kids' movies are total trash. I mostly agree w/ your point about modern kids' programming having adult content shoehorned-in, which trends toward a hamfisted cultural PC-pandering approach, heavy on platitudes and propaganda dressed up as *educational resources*.
Perhaps it wouldn't seem so insidious if The Fairness Doctrine hadn't been scrapped. Maybe not.
A primary cause of this situation: legislation friendly to private interests and unconcerned with public mischief.
In the early 1980s, deregulation suddenly allowed advertisers and toy manufacturers to engage directly with children in deceptive ways.
Now programming can be created and broadcast for the sole purpose of promoting and selling its own branded line of merchandise [toys].
Watched an interesting doc on this about 9 or 10 years ago...yikes has it been that long already?

Anyway, if you wanna check it out: "Consuming Kids" is the name

Oh o doubt. I know exactly what you're talking about. It's the McDonald's way of business. Insert toy to sell garbage food that makes your kid sick. Small price to pay for making a living right? It's sickening what they get away with.
Disney has been notorious for subliminal messaging as well. There has been loads of sexual content in their movies over the years but now they don't have to hide as much as standards have changed.
Though violence is more of a big no no now where as sexual innuendoes are on the rise.

If your issues with the content in programming meant for kids are that great, then keep it out of your house. That's your prerogative as a parent, right?
Personally I think some of the shit that got made in the hippie heydays of the 70's (at least over here) could be much worse, re political content etc.
