The Last Jedi

Post by Invisible Man »

This movie drives me a little crazy. It’s sorta like putting the guts of a Mini in a Klon enclosure.

Anyone else see it?

Hilarious comparison. Caught a midnight showing last night. Went by myself, thoroughly enjoyed it despite some nitpicks.

The more time I spend thinking about this movie the more pissed I get. Wrote a huge post but it was erased. Oh well.

I wonder if the way I feel now is how people felt after Empire.

I thought Mini guts in a Klon enclosure was a good thing?

Like something weird and exciting wrapped in a safe package?

I meant it that way, but also that it’s bound to disappoint a lot of people. Many middle fingers to the audience/fandom in this movie.

Yeah, good point. I get the whole "let the past die" paving the way for new stories thing, but it felt rushed. Except for Carrie Fisher, who can't physically be in the next movie...so how are they gonna tie that one up?

The only thing I can think is that the next movie will take place a while after this one. Pretty sure this picked up almost immediately after TFA.

Interesting, I'd like to hear more about that. I thought it was fun. I'm not super vested in the cannon etc so if they got a little wild with continuity or whatev I wouldnt even notice. My only complaint was that it didn't hit the mark visually that the last 2 movies set, IMO. There were some really cool scenes like that speeder battle at the abonded base but Rogue One is tough to top for lush visuals. I did see it in 3D, does that do anything to the color? I'm partially red green colorblind so I might be way off here

I didn't see it in 3d, just imax and I thought there were some great uses of color, but overall not as visually stunning as Rogue One. The bombing run was pretty awesome. Very WWII feel to it.

I'm surprised that on ILF nobody has mentioned sound design though. I want my fuzz to sound like Kylo Ren's lightsaber.

The Force Awakens felt like Star Wars: The Musical, but without any actual songs in it. I was entertained, and the humour helped carry the tedious story, though it felt forced at times. Is Jedi the same?

Also what's with this trend of having random people cameo as stormtroopers? That was so jarring in the first one, and this one has about three or four more. I hope this doesn't become a trend. It's so... weird. Like there's no point to it. It's a feeble non-sequitur punchline to a weak joke that was never set up. It's the cinematic equivalent of being forced to engage in a facebook post of some cunt taking a selfie pointing at another cunt in a star wars hoodie and making finger guns. Might as well go all in and have a Family Guy style flashback joke.

It was alright. Lots of little creatures to suck the kids in (I thought the Ewok-owls were fun) and some cool visuals. The space battles had a submarine / naval feel to them which was a different take to the usual X-Wing v. TIE fighter dogfights.

Lots of visual cues taken from old Samurai flicks which was kind of a cool nod to aome of the original influences of the series.

There were a couple of eye-rolling moments but after loving the original edits of the first 3 films and then being subjected to Lucas' "improvements" I learnt at a relatively early age not to expect too much from Star Wars so that probably helped.

There are a couple of pointless cameos. Adrian Edmondson plays an Imperial officer for no reason that I can discern but hey, he probably had a great time. There seemed to be a few more one liners and jokes so it does kind of feel like a Marvel movie.

the speeder battle was the best part of the movie just because of the beautiful colors.

otherwise i was mostly kinda disappointed. space battles were ok i guess, but nothing too exciting, same with the sword fightings. i liked the previous two way more, but i'm not sure if that's because i had such low expectations?

i felt like this was a very star warsy star wars, playing it safe, making the usual references, etc etc. i'm glad the humor wasn't as bad as in I-III, but the fucking prank call in the opening scene was really annoying.
i really want to know why IM felt like this wasn't the safe package though.

spoilery stuff:
NSFW: show
when it seemed like luke had given in to the dark side and tried to murder ben, i got a bit excited, but then they had to play it safe again and show that he didn't REALLY try to murder him. also could've had like some sort of zen thing in the final battle, but instead made a reference to the first movie. yay.

Saw it today and like you said, the more I think about it/discuss it the more infuriated I get. Probably the tamest, most unadventurous film I have ever seen that fails to build an iota of tension in its overlong runtime.
Still better than TFA.
