After this morning's Ezhi & Aka announcement (not quite a failed company, but refunding everyone after a year long wait ) I did some googling to see if any of the pedals I was waiting on made it out to the world and google lead me to this thread.
Alexey hasn't folded, but is refunding all the preorders taken about a year ago that haven't been fulfilled. Fortunately, he did deliver on the BROM fuzzes...but the rest as they say is history.
I hope E&A doesn't turn into a failed company and I think it is a really good move for him to drop the pre-order nonsense. Hopefully today's news is a good sign. He has shared tons of pictures of in progress pedals, so by backing out on the pre-orders, hopefully he will take that inventory and list it for sale when he is literally ready to ship. I expect everything to cost more than it did initially (what doesn't cost more now than a year ago?) but definitely bummed to find out after that rollecrcoaster ride that I'm coming up empty handed...thankful to get a refund since he could have just vanished, but still...
The main guy from HBE passed away some years ago; (2012? 2016? Not sure, I'm old and fuzzy...somewhere in there) there was a brief post on facebook about it, then the whole web presence pretty much just disappeared. Still have my UFO, it's been my keeper FTM fuzz since way before then. The Power Screamer is supposed to be a pretty amazing TS overdrive too, according to reviews.

Alexey has always been very open about his mental health, and has often struggled with taking on too much at once, delaying launches and pre-orders. He's a kind fellow, and wants to please everyone, and that has sometimes backfired on him.
FWIW I actually received three of my orders from E&A this year (Polarized Flutter+Echo, Brom Fuzz, Moomindrone T21). I didn't get my Terrible Mother but I was promptly refunded and given priority to re-purchase once they're completed. I honestly can't complain about any of that. Alexey has been up front and honest about the whole situation. And he's been humble and he hasn't asked for anything in return.
He could probably use a business partner to help with logistics (and maybe help with the builds once the designs are completed). But that is completely up to him. There is certainly enough demand for his unique pedals. Hopefully he finds the best path to move forward.
Pre-orders in general are a bad idea. The only times they work out is when the batch being sold is 80% or more done when it goes on sale and they all go out within 2 weeks of the release. Anything beyond that is looking for trouble. I wish more builders would give up on the pre-order model.

Customers are not a bank, and shouldn’t be treated as one. Trust me, this is kind of my job.
As far as defunct companies, did Hartman got a mention? I had a Rat clone and a modern take on the Fuzz Face from them a while ago. I really liked the build quality on both. Went to look it up a while ago and realized all the websites and stuff are gone.

They laid off everyone who had ever had anything to do with it - hundreds of years of collective experience (seriously, after nearly a decade I was still the new guy). Watch that space, I guess.
Some chatter today that zombie Digitech and DOD have been canceling and refunding orders, though maybe (don’t count on it) some orders to retailers are supposed to be fulfilled. Maybe the endgame. Maybe a step towards someone else getting the brands and hopefully the IP and putting it to good use.

I don't think you can call SSBS failed by any stretch of the imagination, but all signs point to Brian having moved onto other things. Sadly reverb has figured it out...
