I want to get one of those super fancy synths (Kijimi, OB-6, Prophet-6, etc.). Where they’re so expensive, I feel like I can’t justify just buying one and then going on a gear fast for a while.

The reason I don’t feel comfortable doing that is because my normal monthly gear budget is around $150, and the fasting time that I’d have to go through post-purchase would take years. But I still want one. So, should I save up for a couple of years and buy one, should I forget trying to own one, or should I buy one and use it to weather a gearless two years?

A synth as powerful as those is probably going to give you a lot more to explore than a new pedal every month would. And some of them (at least the DSI synths) have built-in effects that can take the edge off of not being able to buy external effects.

I bought a Rev2 a year and a half ago and still discover new sounds out of it every time I play it. Much more rewarding than having a bunch of cheaper synths IMO.

I’ve been playing with volcas and roland boutiques. I think people give them a worse rap than they deserve, because they’re really fun and they sound great. I just want something with a wider pallet of sounds and a richer sound quality (outside of the SE02 and Volca FM).

A little like upgrading from a Boss DM-2 to a Chase Bliss Tonal Recall red knob mod. The DM2 sounds good, and you can do a lot with it, but the Tonal Recall just “sounds” better and is far more flexible.

Hilarious thing: now that I ve completed the board, I spent last week playing just guitar+amp, and I managed to write more usable riffs than in the last two months. :idk:

Interesting how that works, huh? Now just fill the space of those riffs with all the weird effects

That's exactly what I plan to do :thumb:

Anyway this fact raises again a question that I face every now and then: to write without effects and the applying them to already composed stuff, or to write with everything plugged in?

Sometimes I find myself inspired by pedals and end up to write things I couldn't write without being somehow influenced by the effect itself, on the other hand writing with just a guitar in my hands sometimes really clears out everything else and lets me just concentrate on the playing itself.

Yeah I know the answer is "why not both?", but I also know plenty of people who apparently write everything on acoustic and then transpose to electric+effects etc..

90% of the time I’m gonna write a riff without effects and add them later. If it’s a lead or a single note run that decidedly needs something, it’s still easier to make sure I’m being technically accurate before adding effects.

So listen to nearly any Stone temple pilots song.. sounds good on an acoustic guitar, no need for it even to be through amps and shit .. ok..

Then something like "Numb" or "mysterious ways" by U2.. just probably wouldn't translate without the effects.

Totally unrelated, but a few days ago I recorded a new lofi demo of the Woozy. I love its weirdness.

I passed on an Acoustic 150 head for $100 today because it had a really loud ground hum and nasty buzz when the input was hit hard. Did I fuck up?
