NYC one night only

Post by oldangelmidnight »

I'm going to have some idle time in the city on Thursday night. How does a person go about finding something interesting to do in New York? I'll be staying in Chelsea but I'm happy to take the subway or Lyft or whatever.

Have fun! :!!!:

look at brooklynsteel.com. they have a daily post "What's going on in New York tonight?" that usually lists at least 15-20 events of all genres. many of the Brooklyn venues also have club nights on evenings without concerts, so if you like the rave sort of thing you'll be sorted as well. frankly, i could probably kill an evening in Manhattan just browsing in record/instrument shops, eating, and maybe having a drink or 2. also check to see if any of the museums are open in the evening...sometimes big museums are open one or two nights during the week. it's preferable to visit art museums during daylight, but if this might be your only chance for MOMA or the Met then i'd grab it with both hands.

What instrument shops would you recommend? That might be a good way to kill a couple of hours.
I'll be there overnight so a concert would be nice. Any clubs that focus on post-punk or other alt whatever genres? Looks like that brooklynsteel.com is defunct.
If all else fails, I'll just go to Alamo Drafthouse to see a movie in peace.

Goin' to Ludlow's always interesting. Wouldn't buy anything there though. :idk:

Rivington consistently has great stuff. :snax:

Of course, Main Drag.

Also, Music Inn is a trip. :trippy:

Meme Antenna is more like a gift shop (with some music items). But it's not terribly far from Main Drag (walking distance) so maybe pop in there for some disappointment. You can also walk to Control (recommended stop if you are into modular) from there, about a 25 minute walk. I recommend walking a lot, if you can do it. Instrument shopping in NYC is kind of tough, it's hard to find deals here (that's why I haunt the B/S/T forum) and the stores usually don't have anything you can't find online cheaper. I guess it;s like thrifting though, the fun is in searching even if you don't score anything. Main Drag will let you audition pedals through an amp in a private room, which is nice. Control is small but it's great because you can hang out there and try stuff, no pressure, the people who work there seem knowledgable and nice. Also in that basic area is Spuyten Duyvil if you are really into beer. Beer heaven. Good barbecue across the street at Fette Sau. All of these places are in Williamsburg, you'd take the L across town and past the East River to the first stop in Brooklyn, then walk. Google Maps it to see if you can do the walk, it's about 1.5 miles to see all those places.

For weird music shows, look here:
https://nyc-noise.com

(just off the top of my head, Dreamcrusher and Charmaine Lee are both worth making an effort to see, IMO)

There's tons to do, and visitors can usually have a good enough time just walking around. Chelsea still has a lot of art galleries so you might look for gallery shows:

The Whitney Museum moved down below Chelsea, and the Whitney Biennial is running now. Walking distance from Chelsea.

i just saw Dreamcrusher open for This Is Not This Heat. "weird" is not a sufficient descriptor. after he finished i thought "only in New York." the transitions from hip-hop to Merzbow racket to electro-goes-death-metal were pretty odd. i liked the full-on noise stuff best...jumping off the stage to rant in people's faces and mosh was old a quarter-century ago.

Charmaine Lee makes Dreamcrusher seem like regular music in comparison. That show is at a DIY type venue though - the Glove - it may not start on time, a little off the beaten path for visitors, and maybe not fun to go by yourself. The Dreamcrusher show looks like a more typical event (this time) at a venue with regular starting times.

I see the Whitney closes at 6:00 on Thursday so I guess that's out. Galleries probably close at 6 too.

Main Drag closes at 8, I think Control closes at 8 too. If you are into modular, that's what they specialize in at Control. While Main Drag has lots of other things, and not much modular. I'm saying that because you may be pressed for time.
