Yooooooooo X-pan is dope. Lot of muffwiggler peenie weenies seem to be bias'd against make noise hype and the fact the panning isn't linear or whatever so posted this to ruffle some feather over there. Seriously though, I installed the module and made a sick patch in about fifteen minutes, went home, tweaked it some more and got it on tape in like two hours cumulative time. Shit rules.

Throwing in my experience after receiving my X-pan this week. I wanted a crossfade/panning module after my first drum'n'bass/electronic set with my rack. I saw the X-pan announcement and preordered. All the weird mixing possibilities with eurorack is ultimately what keeps me wiggling. (Three Sisters is a favorite module as a result.) The X-pan definitely has expanded those possibilities in my system. I understand some people are concerned about specs like the non-linear panning curve or whatever... that's not really of much concern to me. I dropped in the X-pan and made a really satisfying ambient patch, tweaked it, and recorded onto my 4 track within my first two hours of use. Inviting/intuitive interface, ease of use, and fun results... works for me.

hey, Nice. X-PAN sounds like an interesting module.

I've remained staunchly pro-mono with my eurorack set-up because simplicity but could see myself going stereo hardcore if I got the right (eurorack) mixer.

X-Pan is pretty nice. I've just been ducking up outputs from QPAS in fun ways. Nice that I can finally combine some stereo signals from Magneto and Morphagene.

Mimeophone gas struck me hard. Might have to put together a bastardized stereo Shared System.

Good to hear the X-pan is as nice as it seems. That updated system concrete Make Noise had at Superbooth seems like a wonderful stereo instrument, would love to play with one sometime.

I've been on a stereo kick recently which has been based on using Nearness for fixed panning into a LRMSMSLR to process the stereo field with different filters.
Sometimes Cold Mac for animated stereo panning. Simple and fun.

Also, I've started to collect parts to build myself a modular synth based on Serge / CGS circuits.
Got 6 PCBs in hand and just placed a big Digikey order for parts. Stoked to start building.

Nearness is great. Very smart design and super rewarding when patching.

I don't have much time to do "me" things these days, so not much music making time but I've been focusing on using my case as a texture and structure generator, texture being the sounds themselves, with a lot of feedback and overdriving, and structure with Teletype. I also don't have much disposable income for music things these days, and it's actually good because I'm not thinking about what could replace what. I just want to sell a few modules I don't use and get a matrix mixer (and probably a tanh3 at some point) and then the instrument should basically remain as it is.

I want to fuck around with a Rainmaker pretty badly but do not produce ambient music or anything resembling ambient music.

Would you decide Rainmaker is pointless unless one chooses to produce ambient? I don't plan to use Rainmaker as an end-of-chain effect but rather as a WTF textural effect.

I am on the fence because it's an expensive module. I don't sweat space so much anymore and have a pile of modules hanging out in case I feel like swapping things around.

I am not interested in most other eurorack delays because they do not have that sweet, sweet randomize function or that sweet, sweet comb filter.

I could maybe be talked into a eurorack delay + comb filter combo (prob. costs about the same as a Rainmaker). I especially feel curious about the Modor Comb Filter if I choose this route but don't know too much about other delays.

Already, I own an Echophon so maybe I should shut up and just use that.

I was going to ignore the Crucible, assuming it was the same type of module as the Chimera, so thank ILF guys for making me take a second look. I’ve been doing only sampled drums for quite a long time and I’m excited to have some drum modules back on tap (sold a few things to make room and also picked up a BIA!) So Crucible and BIA plus a few bucks leftover in my PayPal, really want to try the Stereo Dipole or the Qpas but gonna wait for money. I broke my leg 6 weeks ago, it was expensive so I gotta stay within a 0 sum budget for a while.

Got the Doepfer SEM Filter in today, sounds great after an hour and a half of messing around. Already got a couple recordings going with it. The resonance is beautiful and it can get just as gritty as the Wasp Filter. Definitely underrated.


I've also been rediscovering DFAM as a kick monster. FM-ing oscillator 1 to oscillator 2 with some pitch decay on both is so tasty. It can go from a normal 808-ish kick to a proper punchy acoustic-y kick to a gritty, rubbery mess. I got a Tiptop One just for kick samples but the DFAM is just more interesting and fun to play with.

More or less maxed out the rack. Need to figure out how to move forward. Swap the rails for proper 94hp and reset the current ones up in their original HEK config. Or cut the Rast in half, depth wise, for 12u x 84-94hp.


Immediate plan is swapping the Muskrat for the Peaks clone that arrived in the mail yesterday, and maybe the Trogotronic for a Dark Matter. (And keeping my eyes peeled for a standalone Grendel to free up space for an Erbe Verb?)


The smarter long term move is to TRY to avoid the black hole money sink of expansion and instead focus on using the ES-8. The idea of which is what started me down the rabbit hole and of course I haven’t used it since I got it.


But it’s the logical next step. I feel like my modulation game isn’t on point - vcv can help fix that, Peaks should as well. And for the first time in years, longer, I’m at the point where I want to start sketching with some of the sounds I’m working up - at least recording some basic samples for reference to return to later, and ultimately figuring out what I’m doing with a DAW or looper or whatnot to get some sort of repeatable and controllable structures going.


Still don’t know what I’m doing. But having an easier time getting there than I may have expected.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one stoked on the Mimeophone. After the announce videos, I decided to drop the ErbeVerb from my system and I'm probably gonna hop on the Mimeophone preorder if it's up come 4th of July sales. I'm also swapping some other business out for an XPan. That said, Erbe is up in the FS page for anyone who wants it.
I've got a kind of in-between setup at this point, since I've moved my Plaits, and have already taken the Erbe out. I'm not patching as much as I'd like these days, but I'm working much more on keyed synth & programming on a DX11, and both have been teaching me some new things i'm excited to bring back to the modular.

That said, I'm also thinking of swapping my DPO for a pair of Mangroves and a Cold Mac (already got one Mangrove and the Mac), so if anyone has interest in getting rid of a Mangrove (either sale or trade towards DPO) gimme a holler, I'd love to work something out! I'll also take cash on the DPO but not til I can score a Mangrove at MSRP or lower, so I guess you can call in a hold on that.

I'm working much more on keyed synth & programming on a DX11, and both have been teaching me some new things i'm excited to bring back to the modular.

Learning to program the DX7 actually taught me a lot about synth techniques. Mainly about how to build up a sound with different sonic components and why you can never have enough VCAs. The DX7 is definitely one of my favourite synths now.
