Isn't downloading music off of soulseek just as bad as supporting Spotify? Granted soulseek isn't making a grip of money off artists like Spotify, the artists still are getting anything out of it.

I personally would argue no. just remember the pocketed money when you need one more excuse to buy merch or vinyl. I use soulseek for classic releases and bandcamp for more current/active releases. BUT I don't have all the answers these are just music habits I committed to before spotify was a thing. file management is kinda heinous so absolutely no judgment on spotify users.

I definitely think using spotify is better than pirating for living artists - £0.0000001 is better than £0.00. Even if it's just symbolic But it's vastly inferior to paying the artist for the music/t-shirt/tea cosy/whatever. When it comes to pirating music from dead people, go nuts.

I used to use Soulseek for obscure noise releases tbh. Like the batch of 20 tapes sold out and youtube did not have them. It was a short lived era for me.

I don't love spotify because it's not at all fair to artists but I do pay for it because it's the best platform I've found for discovering new music and the UI is great. If I like something a lot on spotify I'll generally try to buy it on bandcamp. I go to as many gigs as I can.

I probably buy more music and go to more gigs than before I got spotify so overall it probably works out as a good thing even though it effectively doesn't give small bands any money.

Same. Actually, I've had Spotify for more than ten years now, and really enjoy it. Yes, it doesn't pay the artists well, but sadly that is the case for record sales in most instances too. Spotify should definitely pay artists more, but the whole economy around music (and art in general) needs rethinking.

i kind of agree that digital music (in the form of a single mp3 track) is sort of qualitatively worthless in a way movies and videogames aren't. i dunno if it's because pirating was so easy for so long or what. spotify is definitely just piracy made legitimate and the only people that benefit is the goddamn baddies and fatcats that always make their money. and i am CERTAIN, because i have felt sparks of it in myself at times, that making it “the legitimate way to consume music” DOES turn you away from doing the more meaningful thing of chucking real money at something you like. “i don't need the bandcamp download/12 inch coz i'm using the legitimate method of consumption in spotify”. like brainwashed right wing voters, these people are silent and invisible and yet they outnumber us and the world is worse for it.

Maybe people who don't care enough to contribute beyond having Spotify don't like good music anyway and wouldn't be supporting the same bands I am regardless of distribution models.


Heavy air quotes around "good" there but you know what mean. There's probably minimal overlap between people who don't give a shit about compensating artists and people who like alternative music that most needs individual support.

I don't actually care if people download music, I just brought it up because I thought people were hating on Spotify for not helping out artists and that downloading it illegally wasn't really a problem but that's also not helping the artist out either imo. TBH I'm surprised soulseek is still around, I used that shit when I was in high school. I personally feel like if the band is good and people like them then they'll buy merch/physical copies of music but the days of buying random shit at a record store just to check out a band are long gone. Its much easier to stream it online someway or download it to check it out. If they really like it at that point they'll support it.

I was gonna order that long sleeve as well but I was going to wait till all this holiday stuff was over. I wanted to grab the records as well but will probably grab the tapes because I need a new records player and keep putting that off.

Is soulseek still a thing? It's definitely been more than ten years since I used it.
I just realized that my REM Christmas Fan Club files have disappeared, probably caused by iTunes. I'd normally look for a torrent for something like that.

one of the last remaining peer to peer networks ala napster kazaa limewire etc. It's very good for full albums as far as I know it. Use at your own risk, fire up a VPN.

I agree with all of this, (except, tangential about that last point, the right wing voters actually don't outnumber in america! there are BS reasons they get more voting power than the rest of the population)

I wonder if it would change anyone's mind to know spotify is worth 2.5 Billion and the CEO himself is worth 1.9 Billion. With a B. That sound fair to anyone?
