Thanks friends, you guys help keep me encouraged (and poor) too. :!!!:

Can we talk again about how fucking loud the MBD2 is? I forgot to mention that flipping that 20 db switch is so joke, if I had something like this when I was carrying an 8x10 fridge around - I would blow so ear drums out with it.

Such a tasty, tasty OD. It eats Darkglass OD pedals and shits lightening. Came highly recommended by Excane and Cosmicevan - I have had no OD gas whatso ever after getting. Now I just want delay, and fuzz that makes my bass sound like I stabbed Godzilla

I have to get all wanky on my first big purchase. When I started playing again four months ago I knew I was going to have to drop some money on a decent bass because I simply knew the difference between good cheep and good new. The music man sub bass I got, is surprisingly a very giggable instrument and an absolute steal for 300.00. You get all the punch, feel and that MM growl for the fraction of the price.

But there is no comparison to this 2011 Jazz US made - it has some buckle rash on the back and I can feel that is has been loved and played. I haver never owned a legit fender before and have read (of course from talk butt people) that the necks even on state side instruments come pretty warped. No issues on this one and Al at Centaur guitar did an awesome set up on it / fret dressing. Its everything tonally you would want from a jazz bass, and I understand why it was so widely used.

Comparing this to my old instruments of yonder, I can see where old Leo was going when he made G&L -the toanz out of this bass were almost exactly the same I could produce out of that bass. This being my first really nice truly passive bass, I am starting to like not having a fucking 9vt that I need to change out every time. My pedals reacted differently too, instead of using my bass to adjust the volume I had to really fuck around with my Darkglass Element. The compressor somehow sounds better though this bass and my MBD2 is loud. Holy shit its so loud.

Now that you have a passive bass you might should consider checking out some more of those old vintage fuzz circuits that don't play nicely with active basses.

IE all the good ones.

I liked my active bass when I had it but it was so annoying it not working well with any of my fuzz pedals.

I don't think I ever played an instrument with active pickups, am I missing something?

@MaxMaps excellent writeup, that bass looks sweet and imagining it paired with the MBD2 makes me want to RIFF.

nah they're lame. :p

It can be nice having some active EQ options on your instrument for tweaking during gigs to suit a room, that sort of thing. But personally I much prefer the sound of passives. YMMV.

I plan on it, I want to see if I like a TAFM because it looks like a rad fuzz but I didnt like way it sounded on my then active bass. I have no idea where to start for the vintage fuzz, only that it will probably be a clone and if its going to cost 400+ like everything else dose... I am probably going to pass.

Thanks  - its just like guitars, your not going to see a huge difference from the majority of the pack, other than you get louder clarity and more control on your instrument preamp. The thing is that 90% of all players dont even use the majority of functions that their preamp has. Its why the p bass rules the roost - volume knob, tone knob then make gravy. Your not missing much IMO

Like I said earlier, I hated the way the TAFM sounded on my then active G&L - now I am super curious to try a lot of dirt because I got wayyyyy different sounds out the MBD2 from the Fender compared to my MM.

There is no better quote to describe an active pick up than this

yeah TAFM is great and I imagine you will like it with passives. I imagine what dos was talking about was just "vintage style" stuff i.e. not designed for modern active pickup impedance and stuff, rather than like, actually vintage.

Because I know he's not a $400 vintage fuzz guy AT ALL. haha

The MBD just covers so much ground. It is amazing for low gain growl and wall busting blast your face off stuff. He is building 2 new dirt boxes that I am pretty eager to try out.

I am also itching to try out more SSBS stuff. I just got a mini and it is pretty excellent (really great on guitar too). Got my eyes out for a deal on a TAFM , f.ck overdrive, and also want to try a Buzz. So much great stuff out there these days.

This arrived and I found a brand new Magnetar at a really low price... So it's on its way too!
