we survived, so now what? GEAR GOALS 2021

the #2 board only has 7 pedals and a mini-buffer on, while the main board has 15.

I should just pony up a little extra dough and buy a second power supply for a second board. I would love to have a noise board and a more workable "band board" rather than flipping everything around 20 times a week. I mean I'd still flip shit around all the time but it would be way easier.....

Having separate boards is the way to go. You will still be screwing around constantly, but it's nice when you have the ability to leave something alone for a little bit in my opinion.

- spend time getting to know some of the gear that I don't know too well

- limit the number of new to me pedals that I bring in (maybe no more than 1 per month of some sort of budget?)

- Develop an online presence for my music (as in organize it and just make it available/linkable)

- Create an album of already written music (see "organize and make available")

- Create an album of newly written music (see "organize and make available")

- Improve my ability to perform solo sets of 45-60 contiguous mins; record some of these (for release?)

- Not get into eurorack

- maybe try building a pedal?

- maybe try playing with video / editing a bit?

One month into the year is a good time to take stock of the situation and make necessary changes and redirects if these goals are going to be real and not just let me make up some BS I'd like to magically happen.

so far, I'm an epic failure on the limit to 1 new-to-me pedal per month...since between pre-orders I'm waiting on and things I actually purchased, I'm at 8 in just january - I do believe there is hope to meet this goal when I look across the year since I'm getting better at not browsing and saying no to things I would have otherwise jumped at before this goal was put in place. I've also been doing really well on my first goal of focusing on learning the stuff I've got and this month I spent some quality time with some things I've had for a while but never dove deep on. Finding love in something you have makes it easier to not look at what else is out there too.

The rest of my goals, I have made some minor moves on this month so I think that this is still all attainable in 2021, but I need to up my game a bit here and there.

How's everyone else doing in realizing them goals?

Well, I'm doing OK on modules and that's coming along nicely, I bought a pedal I didn't need but have been curious about for years. Still into the short scale bass idea and selling the bass vi to fund... either a baritone guitar or a short scale bass because while I've had that for years I realise I'm much happier with either of those separately and it sits too strangely in the middle for me.

No urge to buy anything yet, so my plan to keep my pedal buying to a minimum is going ok so far.

I did briefly think I might try writing a book, but other than buy a pad of paper and some pens I've done nothing, while recording a fair bit of music, so I imagine this year will be much the same as the last one, apart from the massive splurge on pedals.

I may well go back to building a few pedals instead, as I've got a few ideas of my own I'd like to try out, and quite a lot of things to finish.

I'm a big soi boi for short scale basses. I lean towards 32" scale these days, but after converting from a preference for 36" the shorter scales are just monsters for comfort and long term playing. The tone of the 36" was my pref...very piano like, but the 32" is good enough, and what you lose in tone you more than make up for in playability. Go for it!

I am thinking maybe even 30" tbh. I have 2 34s and since my regular jazz bass is already very easy to play IDK if a 32 would really give me the shorty vibes I'm looking for.

I mean like a good 30" with good shortscale strings sounds killer. My first instrument was this silvertone p-bass and it is a killer guitar! It works down tuned and all too, I used to tune it to drop C and B and didn't have any issues except for flop. Getting another shortscale would be nice. I'm a sucker for starfires and the new ones aren't that terribly expensive but glued necks scare me alot as a fender gal

My old bandmate used to have a knock-off "hofner" beatle bass and except for the horrible balance it was really fun to play because of the cool scale. I'm looking hard at the G&L Fallout...

Those look neat except for the mustang racing stripe... that's just silly... they need to bring back their swirl finishes.. those were really unique to them..

I’ve got the Epi Rumblekat short scale strung with nylon tape-wound strings, which helps it sound big and thumpy. I’ve also got a 35” Dearmond Pilot strung with those, and while it’s deep, the scale keeps the full range pretty clear, that piano quality but with the zing removed. I’m wanting to spring for the Pyramid flats for the Epi next time—a bit more top end clarity without going full round-wound zing.

haha yeah I guess neck issues wouldnt be a thing on a modern premium instrument.

g&l pickups has had me intrigued for forever. I bet on a short scale like that it would be killer! Does It have the passive EQ and all like the l1k?

There are Fallouts without the racing stripe though!! Which are definitely the ones I would get agree about that

seriously, though, i tend to think things out exhaustively because my resources are limited and i can't afford to buy random stuff and go "i wonder what this does?" all my plans are based on projected use in the looper projects for modules that run in/out of the main board, justified because if i put all my shit on one board i'd need a hand truck to move it, and that the stuff on the modules is superfluous to the main board. i could go with only the main board and the loopers, but how could having 14 additional voices be a bad thing?
