The thread in which we talk about suboctave fuzzes

Post by Eivind August »

Welcome to this thread where we shall speak of fuzzes of the octave down variety. I don't know if I actually need one, and neither do you, if you really think about it. What we can all agree upon, however, is that they are fun. And we all like fun. :!!!:

So, what have we got? The Blue Box is the classic, with simple controls and apparently a volume drop. Then the Buzz Box is the hip DOD version that is ridiculously expensive now. And then all the fancy ones, like that Beetronics Whoctahell, or the Catalinbread Perseus, or I guess the Mantic Flex and the LAL Gomorrah and even the Guitar Disruptor, and then all those weird ones from Parasit Studio, etc. etc. Some are cmos, some are pll, some are magic, the important thing is that they make fart noises.

Which ones are cool, which ones do we like, which ones suck, can we please just talk about some fuzz pedals, I'm tired of the pandemic.

Copilot Mantis!

Beat you to it, goroth.

Always thought the Red Witch Zeus sounded amazing in demos, very powerful fart sounds, but I've never picked one up.

Excellent suggestions.

The Lost Ark by IdiotBox also seems cool. Retinal has one, I believe. Maybe more of a synth pedal, but lets just say that relatively simple synth pedals are fuzzes to make things more fun and less worrying.

And we should mention the Robot Devil from Dwarfcraft while we're at it, because ILF is love.

I thought this thread was going to be about Rats.

These don't even sound like my 1981 White Face Rat.

It’s an interesting one for sure - I have kept the sub octave off when screwing around with it as it pushes so much volume out and in these dark times we live in I’m relegated to my basement only and my only cab is a 215 and I don’t want to annoy my neighbours (even though every morning we leave at the same time for work and the whole family comes outside to wave this drawn out long assed goodbye and I find it very awkward like it’s -20 out just say goodbye indoors - even more annoying is in the summer I’m trying to pump my bike tires up and they’re all just THERE like read the room amirite?). Anyway it’s wild. I prefer it to the Data Corrupter but I also regret selling my Data Corrupter? But I don’t want to make laser gun mega man noises, I just loved the square wave voice and the SUBHARMONIC one too. You know I would literally hit that so hard if Earthquaker made a “light” version of the Data Corrupter. That was regular sized! Fuck that would be so tight.

Anyway I apparently own a lot of sub octave (fuzz) - the Mantic Hivemind, the Meatbox, the Lost Ark, the Bit Commander.... sheesh! I have a problem! And all I really want is an MXR Bass Octave - regular “deluxe” or mini one. Or maybe to rebuy an OC-2 again since prices seem to be dropping.

MI Audio Polyanna is thick, a lil synthy, gives you 1 and 2 octaves down + an octave up, and all largely without wavefolded edgery like the Blue Box can shed - i am very happy with it by itself and stacked with other pedlols - fairly solid tracking if you treat the input nice, and holds the divided pitch pretty well :thumb: (not that a lil pitch glitch isn't nice from time to time - and you can definitely bring out some glitch in both the upper and lower octaves with this one if you mess with it up front by: starving it of input volume/feeding it a stupidly dynamic input range/picking near the bridge with trebly settings on the guitar/insisting on feeding it pitches that are beyond the lower limits of its design capacity/playing stupidly shrederiffic...all of which is as should be for an octave-down fuzz, imo)....

all in all, a good solid base for a synthy tone, but by itself it can remain somewhat guitaristic....

i once had the TWA Great Divide and i thought "i am done with octave down fuzz - quest completed :success: "
foolish me - i needed coin and it was a guaranteed payday, so bye bye Great Divide :worry:
't'was brill while it lasted tho :joy:

i went thru a few other octave-down fuzzes in the wasteland thereafter, but eventually realized the Polyanna was a poor man's Great Divide for my purposes :idk:

the end :hobbes:

Current: Taurus-Dexter Mk-2 for polyphonic & MXR mxr bass octave deluxe for mono/anolog
Other faves: Old MXR bass octave, Boss OC-2
OC-2 clones like the Guyatone MOm5 and the Danelctro Chilidog are also fun and work fine..
Also liked the DOD Octoplus :thumb: Also also digitech wammy pedals are cool and can get sooo ugly sounding... I think I liked the DOD Meat box.. but haven't actually used one since you could buy the things new at a guitar center... those were fun to piss off the guys behind the counter there... "will you please stop the feedback dude?!?!?!"

Notable hatred expressed for: Boss OC-3 [you can hear the sample rate], EHX Multiplexer [low volume, bad tracking but not good bad], Earthquaker Organizer [bad tracking, out of tune, and wasn't crazy enough to be good bad] :idk:

Hell yeah, I do this a lot with mine, which is why I'm unsure about getting something else.

I have looked at the Octoplus a bit, seems like a good and simple alternative. Will check the others. :snax:
