Re: Amp+Cab in a peddle! who be win, who be lose, we find ou
Finally something I am qualified to comment on!
I have been using all sorts of direct guitar solutions for years in some attempt to make a silent rig for practicing/playing at home, since my walls are paper thin and I can’t turn any amp past 1/2 in this place.
I also like looping with drum machines/iPad apps and a guitar, so it’s been this journey to find a way to play all of these things silently together.
A year ago I got the Iridium and using it to go into an audio interface along with a drum machine and iPad, it’s pretty great.
The only thing that is really different or missing from a real amp is feedback; what I mean is not just the guitar feed backing from interacting with the amp, but the way pedals behave.
Examples: modulation effects usually need to have more depth and feedback to sound as intense when playing direct. Delays can have more repeats before oscillating. Filters and odd ducks like the zvex machine can be cranked to be more intense than you would probably do into a real amp.
Some people probably don’t like this, but I love it. I feel like I can push pedals harder or otherwise go further down rabbit holes than with an amp that will emphasize weird frequencies or fart out or other such undesirable amp behaviors.
I also like the simplicity of its user interface, and I think it’s vox model is the bees knees with humbuckers.

Would the Mooer Radar have any place in this battle?

Hadn't heard of that but looks like maybe! I guess vidret would still want a preamp in front of it but I say

I have the Radar and like it well enough as an auxiliary amp & cab sim, but wouldn't want it as my one and only. The Orange sim is really good. The headphone out is handy. The app for editing is not great, but it's mostly a set it and forget it pedal for me, so I just ran through and saved a handful of tweakings, and haven't messed with that part since.

Sounds like someone thinks they're too good for mooer...vidret wrote:I’m a sizeist, no room for mooer here.
On the real, it looks to have a bunch of features but it doesn’t feel like it’s in the same category.
Have you used it?

Jokes aside, I've never tried it... I just always thought it looked kind of nifty and that it might be a decent compact solution for direct recording (ie. better than the free amp sims I use in ableton), maybe combined with another mini mooer preamp...

I get it might not be in the same league as what you're looking for, was just curious if someone else might have some thoughts on it.

I definitely find it intriguing. The editing sounds annoying but this is definitely something I'd use like set and forget so probably OK.

Delighted to have found this thread. I have a Strymon Iridium in my sights for the guerrilla gigs planned with the new jawns.
I play.

I can vouch for the Cab M. Sounds amazing, great reverbs, headphone out and aux in. I built a Dumble preamp with submini tubes in a pedal to go with it and I'm in headphone heaven. Great way to go. Now I'm looking to add a Class D pedal power amp so I can skip my amp altogether if I want.

Cool! Very snazzy preamp there. That pedal + a class D power sounds like a pretty great portable rig. Guess it has the benefit of keeping a similar sound from the headphone playing too?

I remember some of you guys wanted the Olympic MkIIIS samples. I've just recorded some: https://hearthis.at/cscd/set/bass-shift ... d-carcosa/
There's a super handy widget at shift-line.com which allows you to add power amp emulations to cab impulses. Of course, I immediately slapped the 6550 Overloaded (the craziest one) onto an Ampeg 8x10, and it fucking dooms.
Threw in the DOD Carcosa for good measure; for simplicity's sake, I used the same settings (in the pic) in every sample featuring it. Bass, mids and treble on the Olympic are fully clockwise in all samples for the same reason. In practice, I found that cutting a lot of treble on the Olympic worked best for me when using it at higher gain settings with fuzz, but YMMV.
I was playing my Yamaha BB235, which isn't a great bass by any means — but to my ears it sounds surprisingly beefy with this setup.
Please excuse the sloppy playing — haven't had time to grab the bass in ages!

While I love my element - I am still trying to wrap my head around how to use this in just a jam situation. Do I buy my own power amp and speaker cab or do I amp hop ( use some one else’s rig, I don’t ever see my self preforming live any time soon)

If you know you can rely on other people to provide amps then use theirs (ask first haha). If you don't wanna be an amp mooch then yeah getting a power and and cab is the move, if you wanna keep the element tone but loud.
