Okay, but what about a *fun* overdrive pedal?

Post by Eivind August »

EDIT: Yeah, as you can imagine I never got around to buy an overdrive because it just felt kinda... boring?

SO! What is a fun, slightly more expensive overdrive pedal? Still want a sound along the lines of the OD-2 and 250 it seems, but maybe with some more fun functionality, like starve, bias etc. Don't want to spend a ton, and don't want something super large (even though it won't fit as many toan fairies  ), but open for some suggestions.

Bringing this here instead of filling up the Gear Goals thread with this bullshit.

In short, I've been jamming with different people on and off lately, and while I always find room for my oscillating fuzzes, I sometimes miss having a lighter drive in there instead of switching between madness and clean. Have been rolling off the volume on my Wolf Computer, which gets the job done, but have been thinking about getting something dedicated.

So, what good, cheap, easily available drives are out there? I seem to remember some of you praising the Boss OD-2r as a hidden gem. And qersty recommended the OD-3 as well. Seems like both can be had for about $50 on the local used market.

What I "need" is low-to-mid gain, treble and bite, note definition for chords, all that boring stuff. Bonus if it can do some fun stuff as well.

Except when you mention $50, the conversation in goals had me thinking SSBS Mini, which just is really great and can (but doesn’t have to) do things that sound fuzzy without fuzz gain. If you can grab one in budget, the DOD Carcosa can do underfuzz/fuzzy-drive range generally on its own knob twiddling and sounds really good at it. With the caveat that they’re bass shy, I really like Rats as overdrives—they have a jangly thing happening with the gain below half.

If you want to go tan slacks, the cheap 1590a sized Tube Screamer clones seem to all sound like the real thing. The MXR Badass Overdrive, the gold one, is close enough to that thing with a few extra tone shaping tools to tailor bass and low mids.

Have you tried other stuff you have on the shelf? For example, HM-2 with no gain is great for me, though that isn’t for everyone.

tbh the chinese-made sansamp clones can't really be beat for cheap, basic, bland-yet-useful overdrive sounds

second vote for OD-3. It does low-to-mid gain, treble and bite, note definition for chords.

DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 is really good at that.

Mooer Hustle Drive is nice too if you can deal with those too little pedals.

Zvex Double Rock is really good too but too expensive

I'd go for a BD-2. Super underrated.

So underrated that there is a Waza Craft version. :p

I heard that lots of people prefer the BD-2 over the OD-3 and vice versa. The OD-3 is a bit like an upgraded BD-2 with more low-end.

Still the OD-2R is my favourite when it comes to overdriven guitar sounds with lots of clarity. Chords don't get muddy or washy. And it is my go-to overdrive for organ and synthesizer as well. Put it after a resonant lead sound and you are in mid-'90s Acid heaven! :animal:

Plus, it has a Turbo mode! Can the BD-2 and OD-3 do a Turbo? I don't think so, Jack.

I haave a Barber LTD SR Overdrive and it does all of that. Used to be super hyped by the TGPish guys, now its kinda forgotten. Not too expensive, thats why I've kept it. It's good for what you are looking for
