Do I need to be talked out of a Boss SY-200?

Post by retinal orbita »

I have been somewhat obsessed with synth/synth like pedals lately and my YouTubing has led me to think that the SY-200 might be the one for me. It’s the right size, price point, some menu diving but not a ton, ability to save presets, loads of different sounds, lots of tweakibility. I just bought a boss RC-500 Looper recently so I may start experimenting with midi and sync up the clocks…. That’s a new world for a simple guy like me.

I’m trying to find some cons - I sort of thought about saving up for the SY-300 but I’m not sure if that’s “too much” for a simple guy like me. Everyone on YouTube seems to love the simplicity/functionality of the 200 and the 300 is for the real deep menu diver guys. I don’t know if thats me.

Any huge red flags from the ILF crew? I know P&E did a video on the SY-1000 which I admittedly haven’t seen but they closest to “our kind of pedal people”.

(And if you are very crafty you will notice in the 2022 gear goals thread I said I wouldn’t buy a pedal without selling something first, and I already sold a pedal to fund this entirely).

Thank you DOS! I believe this is the sort of thing that’s “right” for me, having loved the sounds of the FM4 and a Digitech Bass Synth Wah but find them limiting, but I’m not willing to delve into the world of real deep menu diving and programming on a computer or phone.

I've been playing with a pair of SY-1's in stereo for a little while now and I like them so much that I decided to get a couple of SY-200's, for the extra tweakability and presets. I too have been into synth peals for awhile now and have been playing with an Enzo, Superego and Mel9 on the board for a few years. Each of those has their positive qualities.

But the thing I like about the SY-1 is that it actually sounds like a real synth on a lot of settings. Surprisingly so. The other synth pedals I've tried, including the ones mentioned above, have synthy qualities but to varying degrees do not sound a real synth. So looking forward to diving into the SY-200.

Not a fan though of the 200 series interface. Tried a MD-200 and OD-200 a couple years ago and didn't like either, including the interface so hoping that the interface on the SY-200 doesn't get in the way. Haven't gotten them yet.

I only got to play with it for an hour today and I agree - it sounds AMAZING. Better than any synth pedal I’ve tried and the tracking on bass is out of this world! I have used an FM4, I have an old big box Bass Microsynth and my go to has been a Data Corrupter (not a synth pedal but similar territory). I’ve flipped a lot of synth pedals including a Digitech Bass Synth Wah, and an older Boss Bass Synth.

I am a little baffled by the interface at first glance. I need to do a deeper dive. I like the presets. The ones I like sound great. I need to figure out building and saving patches and not overwriting existing patches should I like those? I’ll need to put some time into this one….

Interested to hear what you think of the interface after you've settled into it a bit......

But aww yeah, definitely looking forward to getting one and seeing how much difference the additional parameters makes over SY-1
