One Man Band setup - Dick Van Dyke

Post by T.U. & T.V. »

My earliest memory of a one man band or one "entity" band to be more progressive was Dick Van Dyke in his role in Mary Poppins (1964). Here is a link to the portion of the film I am referring too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBo9hcyUSa4

Do you have a memory of such media or a family memory of such a thing achievement?

I suppose I leverage from that memory into a current setup. 1 person setup.
I am in a very confined space currently and trying to find the optimal setup that does not collect dust. Drawings below for a reference to the idea. I just found some time to make a rough first draft in the shed (oh my back).

1 - Peavey Stereo Chorus 212 (stoked to try these amps out as the Roland series are far to expensive for me here in NZ. I have not plugged into this amp yet).
1 - Peavey Stereo Chorus 210 (stoked to try these amps out as the Roland series are far to expensive for me here in NZ. I have not plugged into this amp yet).
1 - Ibanez SW35 Bass Amp - Usually have my drum machine plugged into this and like the 10" articulation
1 - Ashdown EB LITE Bass Amp - Plugged in and feel that I can obtain that B.Boys Pauls Boutique, Spaghetti Bolognese, Hello Brooklyn 808 low end.

Thoughts, ideas, open to criticism or whatever, just keen to explore?

Eric Royer's and Jess Fuller got me to doing some brain bashing and well I think of John Hartford. Straight up legend of course. One link in his chain that truly gives me shivers is that he took his mic'd tap dancing/clogging stage and through it through a flanger effect (I reckon). I see this as taking truly old tech and then throwing it through an analog path. . . . So many puzzle pieces to the puzzle

I checked out that link thanks. I liked the look of the video but tend to like more straight forward shots without flashy editing and came across this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBBJ1N2n-1w
I dig it :0)

Love this kind of stuff. Saw Author & Punisher a few years ago, pure awesome

In New Orleans, there is Helen Gillet. She only plays the Cello with a RC-50 but the way she uses it for percussion, bass and the rest, it is definitely in the one-person band category. She is so amazing, love to see her play.

Surprised we don't see more of this with multi-track looping technology readily available now.

I have a Peavey 212, it’s great! Good choice, great pedal platform. It’s so massively loud I’ve never had the chance to turn it up past 6

Have you looked into frequency splitting, like with the KMA Tyler or Klein Bottle? (You could use a mixer, too, if you like one’s overdriven sound enough and keep your input levels right.) Don’t be afraid to run some feedback loops on a split signal, that would be a nice way to get more variation and chance out of a 1-man setup

Here’s my fav one-man band, but it’s not very helpful here: https://abnerjay.bandcamp.com/track/im-so-depressed-4

Hey Never - thanks for the post. Why did you pick up the P212, how many amps did you go through to reach that one? Keen to know more :0)

I think I have raced through three tube amps to reach the P212. In the past a small Peavey Solo amp running on a car battery was my portable amp and thus it was very easy to access and jam on. For the life of me I could not understand why all my pedals through that amp was accurate and easy to hear. Then I would A/B that amp next to my others and what I would head on any of the tube amps was so very different on the solo. Then the penny dropped, "oh it is solid state". Then the Roland Jazz Chorus came up. Here in NZ those amps crazy expensive the 212 is easily $1,000 used, and $1,700 new. Add shipping for something that is not in this region would be quite hefty.

I stumbled on the Peavey option on this page - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGvr4xex3JU&t=480s

I snatched the 212 and the 210 for half of what a RJC would cost second hand. Easy. . . . choice to make.

For the frequency splitting I run a drum machine through pedals and then a mixing board. That signal path would go through the 10" Ibanez. I use the Boss RC-300 for the "Sub" out signal path. I will check out the KMA Tyler or Klein Bottle that you mentioned. Thanks for the lead :0) Haha, I run a banjo through the guitar amps and they can produce quite a bit of feedback. I have learned to enjoy the feedback, especially with a cello banjo run through a big muff. The drum head vibrating is quite an experience in snake charming.

I will have a peak at your fav OMB too.

Oh yea, KMA. . .are they German? I spat the dummy when I noticed they made a pedal with a narwhale on it. . . Logan Overdrive. . Then I checked it out and it has expression capability.. . . Do OMB's and expression jacks go hand and foot?

So the Klein Bottle firstly is gorgeous, the aqua model. . something to covet that one, based upon its design and esthetics. I use Pedal Empire for new pedals out of Ausi and then a second hand trading site here in NZ. Both of those sites do not offer the pedal, even Reverb is coming up as a big Zero.

The KMA pedal is sold out via Pedal Empire and nothing on the local used market. Reverb has a few but they are $500 bones. . jeepers.. . .

I will watch a review of the pedals to get my head around them. . Thanks again!!!
