RIP - Steve Albini

Post by MaxMaps »

I know Evan and bunch of us have posted on our instagram feeds but this news is such a fucking bummer

http://www.npr.org/2024/05/08/124997670 ... dies-at-61

Post anything that is related to Shellac, Big Black or the thousands of records he worked on.

RIP to the GOAT.

Title TK is my favorite sounding album.
I'd really hoped I'd get to see them on the tour for the new album.
61 is too fucking young.

I loved seeing him grow from teenage edgelord to compassionate, loving, weird uncle figure.

As I posted on FB earlier:

When Microwaves were a 2 piece, John came up with the idea of covering Power Of Independent Trucking.

It was easy enough to play, instrumentally, but many of the lyrics were incomprehensible.

John called Electrical (at the suggestion of Jeff Gretz) and was able to get Albini on the phone. He said he'd see what he could do. I think he emailed John the lyrics later that same night.

Such shitty fucking news. All of the most exciting music in my salad days were recorded by him and I still love all of that stuff. Way too young, ugh!

When I am looking for a podcast to listen too for some reason I always search for Steve Albini and Ian Mackaye as just hearing them talk just makes me feel at ease in the present and connected to my youth.

Here's a great one (which is a 2 parter) with the both of them. I think I have listened to it several times and listened to it again a couple of hours ago. I never thought of ever having heros but I guess it's sort of the same thing.

My whole IG was post after post about Steve, and rightly so. Can't think of anyone who was so ingrained in my life in so many ways, from his early, acerbic scene reports from both behind and on stages (the Big Black final tour diaries in Forced Exposure were always a favorite), as well as gleefully trashing everyone who tried to clown him (record execs, Homestead, etc.), always doing things his way or the highway. So much integrity, so much heart, all wrapped up in what seemed like a cantankerous personality, but a gem of a person was peeled away in his old age (& 61 isn't old at all!). I'm glad he let us all into his sphere via the double edged sword of social media, allowing us to see him mature and age gracefully and admit his flaws and his acceptance of the present, supporting everyone and every decent cause he could. I always thought he would live at least another 30 years, but it all happens so fast, and he accomplished and changed so many lives in the process (mine 10000%). He would probably say he was just doing his job, but how many great people like this come along in anyone's lifetime? He was extraordinary.

Bonus song engineered by Bill Skibbe at Electrical (Albini hated FU, despite their deep admiration for him & being Canadians), but it's hitting right at the moment:

On doing some reflecting, I think that Sport Fishin' by Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet may be the Steve Albini-recorded album I listened to the most. Via Kids in The Hall, Shadowy Men were just huge to me transitioning from high school to undergrad.

Album as youtube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuFTwoL ... P25rmKBmNN

solo (mostly ambient): https://heraclitusakimbo.bandcamp.com/
duo (electroacoustic vibration exploration): https://wenderlypark.bandcamp.com/
trio (tapes/voice/clarinet/synth/poems): https://ourwaytofall.bandcamp.com/
band (spontaneous kosmische): https://stargoon.bandcamp.com/

I also help co-ordinate Okta, ILF's collaborative community ambient project: https://okta.bandcamp.com

Gotta love that Steve brought 'em back when he had full reign casting the Just Fred LP :hobbes: (this was later collected on the Sport Fishin' reisshin' on Yep Roc btw)

Gutted. That's all I can say really. Played a lot of Albini really loud in the days immediately following. Pod, In Utero (2013 mix), 24h Revenge Therapy, Yanqui UXO, Owls, Ocean Songs, Transaction de Novo, You Are There, Attack on Memory… He just recorded an endless amount of truly gargantuan albums. RIP.

Currently listening to the new Shellac record I pre-ordered six weeks ago and it's just a weird time. I'd like to post a bunch of things here, but for now here is what I posted on on the https://www.premierrockforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=70998
Last weekend, I was watching the latest Electrical Audio Gear Dork video on our TV. My wife knew instantly recognized that it was Steve and we laughed since she normally ignores most of my nonsense, but not him. Just a few days later I had to break the news to the family at dinner about Steve's passing. It was worth noting to them that this person I never met had a profound influence on me and countless others.

My daughters (aged 20 and 15) got a good history lesson. We talked about his integrity, a brief breakdown of the problems with the music industry, how some of my favorite bands and albums were recorded by him including a few they knew, that Surfer Rosa was an incredibly important album we enjoyed while dating, how bizarre it was that some roads and connections are unintentionally traced back to him, how my drummer would travel 6-8 hours to see Shellac play at the closest gigs, even using his notched copper picks on our album, etc.

I didn't seek to worship the guy but he was just always around us, his discography is full of bands that made the soundtracks of our lives. The way he pursued becoming a better earnest and honest human will continue to be a source of inspiration. He was the big brother we never had but obviously needed. Our lives were better with having a mentor like him.

Revisiting some of Steve's interviews, videos, performances, and podcasts this past week. Conan Neutron replayed the interview with Steve from 2015 (Ep021). When asked if he had any parting words, Steve said, "No, not really, don't quit, that's probably about it."

Fuck. Those are the exact words I probably need to hear right now.

Hugs to all.

Thanks for sharing that.
I'm definitely in mourning, too. I didn't talk to my kids about it but shared with my wife.
The thing that hit me the other night is that at any time I could have just called up and booked time with him. I didn't need to have written a masterpiece; I could have just gone out there and done something crazy.
His appreciation for absolute lunacy is what I'm focusing on right now and I'm finding it motivating.

RIP to one of the last real ones. I always dreamt of someday flying out to Electrical to record with him and his team. :(

I had no idea he recorded that! I love that record too.
