I am the worst, last week i finally received my box but didn’t have time to post about it until now. Anyways..

The package was stuck in postal nightmare for a month or so, but it was more than worth the wait. UC did a BEYONDAMAZING job, starting with the box itself:

Image

Uselss to say, i was WORRIED. Then i opened the box (well, to be honest my daughter opened everything, an unboxing video exists and has been shared with my dear Satan, sorry for not making it public but my kid’s on it and i prefer not to share this stuff) …WTF!

Image

Obviously liquorice, chocolate and almost all the tasty stuff has already been plundered.

The stompox 365 calendar is a nice tabletop thing, and the business synth-card is now stable on my kids playarea

Aaaaand not one but TWO (!) incredible musicmaking devices:

A BRAND NEW Dr.Sci pedal which is apparently a prototype of something in the works :omg: . TBH i still have to plug it in, things are prety hectic these days here but i hope to do it in the weekend. The Dr.Sci collector in me is over the moon, i pro0mise some kind of review will apper here in the next weeks/months.. i owe it to y’all, especially to UC & Ryan obvs.
AAAAAA FUCKIN PERSONALIZED/STAR-WARS THEMED/ R2D2 COLOR CODED VOLCA SAMPLER!!! :ewok: this is exactly the simple but fun thing i needed to have laying around and have some fun on the fly without need to plug stuff/ dig out from hardcases/remember the functioning/etc. Also it’s super kid friendly and we’re having a hell of fun with it (turns out my daughter makes some sick beats with live record).

Once again, ILFmas Is the best xmas.

Thanks again Satan, i’ll see you in hell making some cacophonic noisy beats.

So glad you liked it, and the video you sent with you and your daughter opening it up was very cute.

The upcoming Dr Sci pedal is called Howlerr. From Ryan: "it's a low gain overdrive pedal that uses one NPN transistor gain stage with a passive 3 band EQ. It's quite subtle, low gain, gentle EQ. You hold down the stomp switch to engage a second NPN transistor stage for a little more oomph. The top 2 knobs are illuminated and the lights respond to the input signal, just a little eye candy haha."

I got to try it shortly before shipping and I will definitely get a production model once they start shipping. Very good range and tasteful clipping, and the secondary footswitch is such a nice idea and works really well. Gets pretty gnarly at max gain with the second clipping engaged, even if the focus is on more subtle gain staging.

More of a close up pic. The finish is not final for the production model and rather a custom finish Tanya did for Dowi:

And the Volca Sample was a blast to customize, minus the part where I had to do it all over again because I was sleepy one night and did a final finish of silicone remover instead of a clear coat. That was demotivating as fuck. Anyways, in so happy to hear that your daughter is getting some good jams out of it. My two year old was all over it so it was hard getting a good pic of it before shipping it off, but this one I think captures both the finish and his excitement to play with it.

Happy ILFmass, y'all! Can't wait for next year!!

I told them Dowi was my mark for SS and that he's the biggest Dr Sci fan, and I asked if they had any prototypes around for old stuff that I might be able to buy from them, seeing as Dowi already has all of their offerings. Then they hit me back saying they know of Down and wanted to offer a prototype for an upcoming pedal instead, because they're just the best?

They are. Miss them around here.

(My first ILFSS I got an ILF-DD from Jwar that he specially etched with Santa hats and beards and ho ho ho’s. I’m glad the traditions of customization continue—that Volca is gorgeous!)

i'm going to make a fry-up with potatoes and veg (and potentially some fajitas) that should be perfect for the mango hot sauce from my package. Christmas continues!

Woo, in a pay-it-forward flavour scenario, I've already gone through one thing of hotsauce from MSUsousaphone.

(Plus, I got myself a peach hot sauce from the same booth I got your mango one, and that's still in the queue... I've been trying not too have too many on the go at once!)
solo (mostly ambient): https://heraclitusakimbo.bandcamp.com/
duo (electroacoustic vibration exploration): https://wenderlypark.bandcamp.com/
trio (tapes/voice/clarinet/synth/poems): https://ourwaytofall.bandcamp.com/
band (spontaneous kosmische): https://stargoon.bandcamp.com/

I also help co-ordinate Okta, ILF's collaborative community ambient project: https://okta.bandcamp.com

i need to say something here, possibly motivated in part by my current depression but true nonetheless. i’m 68 now, my best (last) friend died of COVID, and i’m not close to anyone in my family. there’s “work friends” you never see off the clock. there’s Becky, our pets, and that’s it.

so being part of this is really one of a very small number of positive inputs from others that i get in life. i make my lattes every day in the Powell’s cup Max gave me, and it makes me smile to know someone cared about me. i love the gear y’all send, but more than anything it’s the thought that counts, and that means a lot to this tired old man.

It’s a tangible reflection of the soft affinities that brought us all here and keep us together. We’re definitely not all clones of each other, but something about how we connect to music making, the world, and each other works. In some ways maybe more so than when we had higher traffic. There may be some therapist-like element of enough of a remove to provide perspective in a supportive way, gear wise and a bit life-wise, too. I dunno, my whole online thing is pretty anon and guarded but I still feel “seen” here. I’ve tried to help keep ILFSS together to support our little community, and I’m grateful to everyone else who has done the same.
