Very noticeable. I keep my looper's gain as high as I can without it clipping, and the pedal will clip it pretty hard.

It has a level control, but it doesn't go down low enough. Maybe there's a trim pot in there I don't know of, though. I recently learned Dunlop/MXR have been doing that sorta thing.

It also has a bit of a delay before it turns off... but, my Dunlop 105q had a trim pot to fix that, so maybe the Variphase does too.

yeah my bad horsie had a trim for that as well. it's pretty much instantly on, but sometimes there's a delay when stepping off. there's a trick to it though, with the rocker all the way back the effect turns off, so if you slide back out of a note and then step off fast enough, it's seamless.

I had to open it up to check...

There's a single trim pot on the inside. I can't find any info on what it does.... I'll email MXR about it. Just because if it fixes the boost... I get to put it back on my pedalboard.

Alright... so I got a reply.

"It sets the frequency of the oscillation. The phase will sound off rhythmically if altered."

...is it bad that only makes me wanna mess with it more?

I have. It seems like nobody has them.

I guess paying $200 for what is basically a Phase 90 (But it's both types! script and block letter!) isn't a popular thing...

Bastards.

what about 'that famous r28 mod' - would that work on the variphase? it's supposed to make the effect more subtle anyway, right? could help.

Well... these are SMD components... so modding won't be easy.

There's a changeable jumper dealy inside the pedal that switches between the script and modern sound. (the pedal says "shallow" and "deep").

I guess that would be similar, if that's not actually what it does.

Yeah. It has the volume jump in both modes. Honestly, there's not a hell of a lot of difference in the two.

BUT! I will say something for it. It worked GREAT when fed into a normal Phase 90.

I usually used the Variphase for a slow phase, and set the Phase 90 up really high. It was a really cool effect.

Sadly, I sold the Phase 90, and it doesn't work well with an EHX Small Stone.

And the volume jump is OK when using it for solos. But it lets you boost more anyways.

...maybe I could wire a small trim pot to the switch to cut the volume a bit when it goes into the pedal... :?:

...I'd love to. :haha:

But I sorta broke the jumper...

...and from the factory one of the holes where the feet mount wasn't drilled...
