My brother uses one to make demo riffs to bring to practice...seems to like it enough.
Seems people dig them for no fuss simple setups to cut demos/ideas etc.

I have the UX2 and I use it for that exact thing. You can get really good quality recordings with Ableton Live Lite you get with it but it will work as an interface for any other software.
One thing to note is that you'll need some decent monitor or high quality headphones to listen back.
Another alternative you might want to look in to aswell would be the Onyx Satellite.

Another thing to think about, instead of an SM57 I'd recommend a Sennheiser e906.
The Sennheiser has an extended frequency range, and the recorded sound is more alive than with an SM57.
It's more money, but worth it.
