hoy goys, I'm going to buy a bass. I'm an experienced guitarist and that's really fun and all, but I've messed around on a few basses of friends' and it's just really fun.
I'm not exactly sure what to look for in a bass, i just know I don't want one that is made to sound a certain way, as i want to be able to play different styles on it. I've got the fingers, just need some good support under them ya diiiig. Not necessarily an Everybass (i do love quirky instruments), but you know, a good one.
I saw one of these at a pawn shop for $90 if i remember correctly, it looked like it would just need some truss adjusting and set up but otherwise was looking good http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/squ ... ass-guitar though squier doesn't really make the most reliable guitars in my exp.

If you can get a Freeman Sig for $90, that'd be a killer deal. Squier is putting out some stellar basses right now. I just picked up one of the CV jazz basses, and it's fantastic.
the one thing you want to check with a used Fender-type bass is that the truss rod hasn't already been run to the end of its adjustment correcting for the use of roundwound strings by somebody who's been slapping and popping. it's not uncommon for the necks to bow under the stress of heavier roundwounds, and if the truss rod is already all the way in there's no way to fix it short of having the neck steamed and straightened.

Use just unscrew the nut... pop in a few washers and bob's your aunt... Old Dan Erlewine trick What happens is the wood in the hole can compress over time and as people keep adjusting it it gets worse... now.. if the neck is warped, it's warped... [I don't believe in steaming necks... it might work but when wood is steamed you loose a certain amount of rigidity and strength] but since we are talking Fenders.. you just get a new neck and there you is...
My first bass was a Squier Special P (I think that's what it was called). Had the P/J configuration. I had it for less than two years, and the volume pot for the P pickup broke. Then the truss rod broke (or had been broken) for no good reason.
I'm pretty sure I just got a lemon, but I'll probably never buy any Squier/Fender instrument again.
Epi T-birds are nice and so are the EB-0/3's I had an EB-0 for a little while. A cheap little short scale, was nice for dicking around with. Solid instrument.

I should point out that Ibanez Soundgear basses are really nice, especially for the price. I'm actually probably gonna be getting one here in the next few weeks stay tuned.

My main bass for 18 years has been a mid priced Soundgear, it has never failed me once in all that time.
