2 x 15 cab for a guitar. Your opinions are lustfully desired

Post by Kubenzi »

Well.

I rock a musicman 50 watt combo with a ten inch speaker. Its the perfect grab and go, but iwould like to add a cab on to really let the thing show it's guts.although i could do a 4 ohm configuration with a phantom jack, i would really prefer to just find the perfect 8 ohm cab for it.

In this economy,a nice new avatar or something seems a little far off.I do commonly see cheap silverface era 2 x 15 cabs that as far as i can tell are 8ohm cabs.My main question is how do you feel about a ten and 2 fifteen combo for guitar? My sub question is, since i will be in the market for an octave down fuzz( or 2 down perhaps) does that type of pedal really sound perfect through 2 15s? if so what is your favorite octave down fuzz for this type of application? If devi makes one i would be seriously interested.anyways thanks for any advice here

My combo amp uses a 1x15" speaker. It's definitely a different sound. It really gives me a good response to fuzz and a great bottom end clarity. It's occasionally brittle on the top end, so I use a Bad Monkey as a "clean" treble booster or the TP side of my Shoe Gazer for a dirty treble boost.

Devi doesn't really make an octave down fuzz, although with some combination I have gotten some sub-octaves every now and then. The Blue box is great if you want to use it with your main fuzz, or the Pollyanna if you want a lot of variety and tweaking and its also loud enough to play by-itself.

No idea on the cabinet situation but thought I'd share my octave down fuzz experience. :thumb:

generally speaking, 15's give a different low end that is heavy on the low mids but 10's give a better low end response. they are tighter and the reflex of the cone is quicker, which gives the faster response needed to represent thumpiness and keep it tight. there's a reason the AMPEG SVT cab is loaded with 10's and ported. if you were to combine both 10's and a 15, it's fine! a great combo is a 4/10 and single 15.

you could look for a used peavey classic 15 cab. they are open back and cost around $215 new, so used should be fairly cheap.. :thumb:

for years i've used (2) peavey classic 50's each through it's own 4/10 peavey classic cab and Marshall JCM 800 through 2 single 15 peavey classic cabs. 3 amps, 4 cabs and i could see over the top as it only stood about 5 ft tall. did i mention it was loud as fuk too? low end for days and didn't have to adjust the controls much when using baritone (mostly just the gain).
i've always liked the peavey classic series amps and have fond memories of their performance.

maybe that will help....maybe not. tone is subjective anyway. :blahblah:

That's the recommended extension cab for my Peavey Delta Blues:

Maybe I should get a 15" for my peavey classic 50. :excellent:

I could have it on the other side of the stage where a bassist is supposed to be.

our VELCRO FUZZ does down octaves... and a crapload more.

my experience using 2-15 cab with guitar = poor volume & poor treble/upper-mid response.
it may have worked out better if i had some 10s or something running with it... or probably i just had lousy speakers.
they did have fairly tiny magnets now that i think about it.
