Cheap overdrives / low-key fuzzes?

Post by jrmy »

So, the design studio I work at has an intern who has gone above and beyond the call of duty (at one point, he went to a client's office to help them assemble a bookcase... another time, he drove through a snowstorm to deliver color proofs to a client), and is now getting ready to graduate. He plays blues & jazz guitar pretty avidly, and likes to talk about gear, but doesn't have many pedals. We want to get him a going away present, and I was thinking that a nice overdrive or low-key fuzz would be cool. The only thing is that we've got a $40-ish spending limit. Anybody out there got any suggestions? A local shop carries the EHX LPB-1 for $45, which could be an option (more of a boost, I know, but it could be nice anyhow), but I was thinking it would be nice to get him something with a little more "flavor."

Bad Monkey. A very useful overdriver.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, God said, "Let there be Lips!" And there were, and they were good, and the lips said...

Bad Monkey's are fun. Also the nano muff overdrive can really beef up your tone.

Re: the Nano Muff - those would be cool, but aren't they more than $40?
